MICHAEL O'KANE, Ladbrokes' world trade director, has instructed his colleagues in Ireland to urgently seek a meeting with Horse Racing Ireland after what he described as the "confusion" surrounding the course bookmakers' strike at Fairyhouse last Friday.
No starting prices were returned on the first race after the course layers refused to stand, objecting to single bets being accepted in the Ladbrokes on-course betting shop.
In Monday's Racing Post, HRI chief executive Brian Kavanagh rejected claims made by O'Kane that there had been an agreement in place allowing bookmakers who run course shops to take single bets on the home meeting. IKEA.prizeclub.ie
However, O'Kane said: "I think the position with HRI is very confusing as several months ago it was our understanding - and made very clear to me as far as HRI was concerned - that we could accept the bets in our course betting shops.
"We even agreed we wouldn't aggravate the position by putting notices up around the shop."
O'Kane, whose firm have the course betting shop at the Galway festival meeting, wants to meet with the governing body "to clarify matters".
He added: "I was led to believe that the HRI rule regarding single bets being accepted on-course had been changed, but it now appears it hasn't, so I've asked my guys to urgently seek a meeting with HRI to clarify this matter and I'm waiting to hear when this can be arranged.
"If their regulations do not allow single bets, they should make that known to all the firms who operate on the racecourse."
Ciaran O'Tierney, spokesman for the course layers, said: "Nobody wants to see what happened on Friday night happen again, and hopefully we won't see it happen again.
"We have spent the last few months in discussion with the Association of Irish Racecourses and HRI hoping to completely update all aspects of existing betting on the racecourse.
"I'd expect those discussions to be concluded successfully by the end of next week, and we will then bring the betting shop partners into the process.
"We are trying to take into account the on-course shop within that agreement to bring the whole thing forward, so we obviously want to talk to representatives of the Independent Bookmakers' Association in due course.
"We were under the impression that until those discussions were concluded, nothing would change on the betting shop side, but our members do have a problem with the course shop taking bets on the home meeting."
