GARDAÍ have launched an investigation into an alleged assault during an Offaly GAA game on Saturday night.
The alleged incident occurred in a county Division One Football League final between Ballycumber and Edenderry in Mucklagh. Ballycumber won the game after extra-time (1-17 to 0-12).
However, the game was marred by an incident when a Ballycumber selector allegedly struck a teenage member of the Edenderry team with less than 10 minutes remaining in normal time.
The player, 17-year-old substitute Seán Doyle, was battling to secure possession along the sideline when the alleged incident occurred.
The game was delayed for approximately five minutes while the player received treatment. He was subsequently taken off by management suffering from a bloody nose and damage to his teeth.
The referee then sent off the Ballycumber selector and resumed the match which, according to sources, the alleged incident apart, was played in a sporting manner throughout.
Gardaí in Tullamore were subsequently contacted, with the Garda press office last night confirming that: "Gardaí in Tullamore are investigating an alleged assault that took place at Mucklagh on the 16th of July at approximately 8.30pm."
Offaly GAA chiefs are awaiting the report of the match referee before deciding on their next course of action.
Offaly chairman Pat Teehan last night confirmed that he would be making no further comment until he was in receipt of the report from the referee.
Teehan said: "As with any match, we would deal with this through the normal disciplinary procedures once the referee’s report is received."
Edenderry GAA chiefs declined to comment last night pointing out that a Garda investigation is under way into the matter, while Ballycumber GAA officials could not be contacted.
