Off to a good start by deciding not to play in Scotland this week. His US Open performance was outstanding and certainly the one to beat in the British Open. He knows the course from his amateur days, practising there this week as well. A different player since Augusta where both he and his caddy learned plenty.

Tell me 7/1 is a huge price, please.

im sure someone will tell you 7-1 is a **** price for the open but look at the days when people backed tiger at 5-2 !! 7-1 is fair for a player who is this good imo.

Rory is a massive price at 7/1 considering that he is a banker to be in the top 8 = 7/4...I think he will win easing up...

If he places you don't get 7/4, in reality it's more like 8/11.

Agreed he should put in another good performance though! [:)]

He will walk away with this title...this guy just wants Majors, Majors, Majors...I think he is unstoppable on a Links Course...If the weather wasn't so extreme last year he would have gone close...He is a lot more sharper this year...

Op true in what you say regarding his chances, fairly benign weather should help him as well as it takes the lottery element out.He could very well have risen to a new level.
7/1 in a 150 man field.Hard to discount anyone, Who can forget old man Tom Watsons nearly effort and little known americans Curtis and Hamilton in last 10 years, fair enough Wood(3),Harrington(2) and even Cink to an extent say relatively fancied can do well also,L. Donald had a simply superb round yeserday,Kuchar did well after a terrible start.3 americans in top 5 in 03 would lead me to believe they can handle the course, granted the europeans have improved in the last few years.
Rory also not a prolific winner, two on each tour(I think) granted very young, think he,ll obviously in the limelight this week, should handle it but don,t think it will help.
Not for me at 7,s not laying him either and want him to do well.
Op tell me my 500, on R. Green is a huge price pleaseGrin
Gl if having a punt this week.

Just to add a little on that if Mcilroy gets the supposed 9.09am start winds 13mph dropping to 6mph at 4.00,slight advantage with early starters friday also.So looks to be not too favoured with the draw.

8/1 now in places! Bookmakers out to get him. Should I wait for the 9/1 when Luke Donald goes favourite after his overhyped win at the weekend?

Bruces will pay you as a winner if you finish runner up to McIlroy.

I'm backing Casey, McIlroy and Ross Fisher, just small bets for some interest.

he hits the ball far too high into the air to be any sort of a threat on a links.

FFS, just look what happened to him on the Friday afternoon of this comp last year...

But those were just extraordinary weather conditions were nt they?
By:

When: 11 Jul 11 16:17
Fair point, BJG.

The conditions did however, highlight the weakness of his tee-shot height vs. strong winds [á la a links course].

He was right to give Scotland a miss this weekend; however, the conditions would have been ideal prep [although I appreciate he has played Portrush as a proxy this week].

I just can't back him at 8/1 on a links.
By:
BJG
When: 11 Jul 11 16:19
Not backin him myself but could nt blame anyone for backin him - think 8/1 is about right

If the weather stays calm he is without doubt the one to beat for me

Think there is some value further down the lists though

Why do people think mcilroy cant play links golf in the wind?surely thats exactly what he grew up playing. Not like he grew up in california in glorious sunshine playing shoot em up parkland courses.
If its just based on that 2nd round last year thens thats harsh as they were extreme conditions.Getting close to a very tempting price for me.
By:

When: 11 Jul 11 16:45
It's more to do with the height he places on his drives.

Listen, 'tis only an opinion. I can't see Rory bate-ing down my door
anytime soon to take my advice! Laugh

Think it's a bit of a myth about Rory hitting it too high for links. Fair enough he had a bad day on the Friday last year in some awful conditions but you don't grow up on links without having the ability to shape shots and play the low stingers that Tiger learned so well. Apparently he had a 61 in Royal County Down on Friday so game is in fine shape. Don't really see it as a negative taking few weeks off after US Open.
Having said that not sure I'll be backing him yet. Of all the Open courses this one requires a bit more luck. Few blind shots the pros don't like so putting me off taking single figures about any player.

Fair points IrishRo. I just have this memory of how well a South African in the form of Louis Van Oost [sic] handled the conditions last year. The weather was more severe during McIlroy's round IIRC.

In terms of price - not for me at circa 9.0 [post commish]. However, if some "benevolent" layer[s] want to give me 17.0 instead...CHARGE! Laugh

From a twine-making perspective, the more carnage I/R, the better.

I like Overton too-good Open record last couple years. Another at a big price is Ryan Palmer. Plays well in Hawaii so has the game for windy conditions. Two main bets I like though are Charl Schwartzel and Justin Rose(hit 33/36 greens over weekend in Scotland) plays links golf very well.

I like the look of Jason Day, I have been quite impressed with the way he has played of late, The price of a top 10 finish is not to bad. Sergio Garcia also getting back to some form, His putting lets him down, if he can get that right, He could be a real threat. My Following picks to win plus a bet on top 5 and 10 finishes.

Jason Day
Sergio Garcia

Day a very sweet price in the mid-40s.

Finished the last couple of majors very strongly.

Rory when asked yesterday whether the two punters that had £20,000 each on him, were either shrewd or desperate, went with the shrewd part,I suppose thats as much use as a horse nodding his head in the parade ring.
I still believe he,s at a slight disadvantage being an earlier starter on Thur with the weather f/c which may part explain the drift(too short originally and competitive bookies being other factors).20 mph + on the sat and sun going to make it interesting.
Good thread on the golf forum "musings at sandwich" well worth a read.

Is Rory Irish or not for betting purposes Betfair seem to think he's not and give 'Northern Ireland' nationality for the market of winning nationality and then in the market for top 'Irishman' he's fav, so what's this all about.....
By:

When: 13 Jul 11 22:10
Golf is an all-island sport. Rory and Gmac represented 'Ireland' in world cup 2 years ago. However you do have a fair point about the winning nationality market. Seems to be a contradiction but im sure market rules have covered them.
