All depends who you want to back

If you want to back an outsider then obviously Betfair is where you want to do it

If you fancy any of the market leaders then there is very little difference  between BF & high street

McIlroy - 13/2 vs 7.4 (6.08/1 after 5% commission) - HS is better
Westwood - 10/1 vs 12.0 (10.45/1)
Luke Donald - 16/1 vs 18.5 (16.63 1)
Martin Kaymer - 22/1 vs 24.0 (21.85/1) - HS is better

The book % is somewhat meaningless if the majority of the "margin" is in pricing up guys at 500/1 who should be 1000/1 or better and who probably won't be backed at all anyway, by anybody.

In the interest of objectivity, and becaure MS Excel can be your friend, here is the true story of the book between P/P and Sp0!ls. In any case reaching for the measure of OR is a weak tool to measure competitiveness.

P/P 169.2%, EW 7 places, top price or joint top price on 1 player in the top 20 (Westwood)
Sp0!ls 170.6%, EW 8 places, top price or joint top price on 4 players in the top 20 (McIlroy [Standout Top], Westwood, Donald, Kuchar)

I have the data and spreadsheet (inc connections/macros) here and will send it on to anybody who wants to message me their email address. I dont have time to put all of the firms analysis up but if somebody else wants to then you are welcome to the info.

Gimmeabreak,

IIRC, I obtained 170.3% for the win book.

A similiar analysis on the place portion yielded circa 627%

As it is an E/W, rather than place mkt, the win mkt book % must be added back to give the overall
E/W book percentage.

i.e. circa [170% + 627%] gave me a rounded E/W book % of 798%, which is two percent less than what
I anticipated when I quickly did the calcs.

I do agree about the value re: the front of the mkt - fair points.

But the value in their book? Having all the rags running for them at prices at which they won't lay a bean.

Something comes out of the pack & they get the lot.

PS The spoils' golf trader reading this post has just had his E/W calcs checked for free.

Youd love to be taking the 20s mac dowell with them when 33s freely availlable and what about 33s poulter when he is about 75s on betfair.I asked them for a ton ew Kaymer at 20s yesterday and was told I could have 20 ew.There prices are in general scandalous but the mugs will be drawn in by the first 8 stunt.

They were best price McIlroy, Donald, & Westwood last week when the offer was first announced.

What do you expect them to do - they've obviously laid the money last week. If you're only looking now then more fool you.

Some people are never happy
By:

Had a look there and, in fairness, some of their prices are shocking alright

They are only joint best-price on 3 golfers, one at 150/1 and 2 guys at 300/1 and they are actually stand-out worst price on a lot of the first 20 in the market which is very poor really.
By:

They're prices are shocking throughout the list when you have a closer look. From a punter's point of view you're actually getting the value in the indo beside the Boyle's who are forced to match the 8 who then use a different and more competitive price source.

Just back from local Ladbrokes who are betting 7 places in shops. Was going to back Kaymer at 25/1s on them terms but said id hold fire until tomorrow. A good decision, just had my pony each way @ 28/1 with an extra place. Also took the 70/1 Poulter for a tenner each way. Spoils have gone mad

fwiw - Kuchar and Goosen are my plays. I noted that Jason Soebel tweeted earlier today about the conditions. Said with the wind and rain that somebody would shoot 90. Any betting on the winning score? Over par must be a possibility?

Tuesday and Wednesday - 22mph NNE winds onshore (pretty grim wind on the south east coast) both days, with rain tuesday afternoon.

Thursday - NW wind, dropping throughout the day, better for afternoon starters, but not too bad at all.

Friday - WSW picking up to about 18mph in the afternoon so favours early starters, but again not too bad.

Just in from the Tuesday practice day. A few observations. Others will be visiting and may agree or disagree, but I dont think any of this is really controversial, and may help in some small way.

- Rough wont be much of a factor. It has gone whispy but the recent rain has a new lusher growth, but its not long near the fairways, go far offline its brutal, you can get horrible lies, but I cant see the rough being a big factor.
- Fairways running fairly quick, and undulate tons, good drives can find the rough and fairway bunkers. Some really tough fairways to hit.
- Greens at mom quickish but not overly fast, though doubtless they will be cut shorter for the event itself. Fairly firm, lots of balls rolling to the back of Par 3's. If they dont get rain and dont water them then expect them to be tough to play to and putt on. All seem to undulate and most seem pretty small. Lots of tough short putts, it may unerve any of the shakey putters.
- Wind will be a factor. Forecast says it was about 20mph today but I play on the coast and it was stronger than that. Coming in from straight offshore today (north east I believe)  though looks like it may switch to south. The 570yd 7th played straight into wind today and many of the players we saw couldnt make the carry to the fairway! Even Cabrerra and Villegas were only about 25yds onto fw. Saw Donald hit another shot from the "forward" tee, which looked like the normal medal white tee, and he only made the fw by 25 or so yds. So if the wind comes from the same direction expect tees to be moved around. The 426yd 17th they were taking pot shots at the green! Cabrerra went through, Dustin was pin high 25 feet away on green.
- Length wont be a big factor really (as if any long carries into wind the tees will prob be bought forward, cant having dearies with the embarrassment of not being able to reach fws!), finding the fw and first cut will be the important thing, a course for accuracy.
- Ability to spin the ball well off tight lies will be a great advantage getting at those tight pins.

I havent played it myself but did look a very tough course where luck will play an important role, accuracy, solid putting and patience - could say that about a lot of courses but from what I saw a short to medium length accurate cool persona type of player should do well.

Of those we saw Donald, Cabrerra, Dustin all striking it good. Watney and Fowler hitting it sideways. Mickelson an oaf (real glad I bet on him at 36, not). YE Yang and Choi looked good, but most of the Asians we saw were losing the ball to the wind, and didnt seem to have the shot variety required, and Watney looked perplexed (mind you he always does).

fwiw....I was checking through the various markets on here and came upon .."winning nationality"....well well Rory is listed as 'Northern Ireland', now i would have thought your either Irish or your not.....So had a look at 'top Irish Player' and woah and behold Rory is fav !!!!! and McDowell 2nd Fav.....so what is this all about?.....either your Irish or your not....does anyone have an opinion on this, please.......

The rules state that Irish includes Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.

Where is the ambiguity on this?

Rory considers himself to be Northern Irish. Whether people agree with that is another matter, but he is fully entitled to his position.

The markets are quite clear. If this is related to other matters, then it does not need to be on an Open thread,
By:

Granted the winning nationality market does not specify who is included in the Northern Ireland team and maybe should be cleared up, but I would have thought 99% of account holders would immediately include GMac, Rory and Clarke.
