Blimey, would any jockey know how to ride a non tryer? I thought the game was 100% straight. Strange comment

I think Richard Hughes said something similar about his ride on Dubawi Gold in Frankel's Guineas and he too maximised his finishing position as a consequence of how the race was run . Halford saw the potential for a speed duel involving the English speedsters and gave his jockey very astute instructions that were the winning of the race. In the circumstances anyone querying the political correctness of the instructions needs to have a good look at themselves in the mirror

By the mere utterance of the phrase he is insinuating something that should not exist in the realm of horseracing where betting is intrinsic to the product.
We all know it does, but two wrongs don`t make a right.
I would imagine if he spoke like that in France or Australia he would be asked to explain himself and if if they didn`t like his answer he would be banned for his troubles.

unfortunately, it goes on in every yard.  more so in the jumps, to get handicapped.

A fishing fred shirley?Confused

You hear this phrase from a different trainer every other week. Too much being made of a tongue-in-cheek remake if not a fishy thread. Otherwise naive to believe that a jockey wouldn't know how to ride a non trier -how many FTO horses in mdns/bumpers are trying/ready?

As the phrase is used to describe a winning ride(s) I don't see what all the fuss is about.
I take it to mean "switch the horse off...get the horse settled..."

well said das ...

Well then he should choose his words more carefully.
I hate p.c. b/s, but what is so wrong about questioning the comment?
Are horses and trainers not banned for being non-triers!? Is it not something that should be eradicated!?
So we all know it goes on and so be it. Great attitude.

i agree with most of u.

obviously he was talking about the tactics and the horse was always trying but i have to say its quite unsettling to hear the words uttered from a well known respected trainer.

we all know it goes on, of course, but its not something you want to hear straight from the trainers mouth on live telly!

he shouldnt have phrased it that way!
Report ilikewavingatbuses June 28, 2011 12:48 PM BST
and id say its probably safe to say he has uttered the words away from the camera lens, i wonder if that one won too?

not what u want to be hearing fellas!

It`s just a can of worms than will forever remain unopened in Irish racing.
I like Halford. He`s not the worst of them by any means which makes it all the more galling!

totally agree GS, like halford a lot myself and he can certainly train horses!

just dont want to hear the words 'non trier' uttered live on course. its just not right and like u im far from being pc , quite the op in fact but i thought ot was a bit unsettling, just didnt sound right!

paul pickard said the exact same thing  to Gordon Brooon after his winning ride on tominator on saturday,Just goes to show most jockeys and trainers havent got a brain between them when they say things like that
