GAA bosses in County Tyrone are set to hold a full scale investigation a referee and a senior county official were knocked unconscious after violence erupted at the end of a ladies football final.

Simon Brady, 43, was punched by a supporter, while Tyrone ladies football chairman Martin Conway also had to be helped off the pitch after he was assaulted on Friday night.

Speaking in the Irish News, Mr Brady said: “I was checking my score card to make sure everything was in order. I got a tap on the shoulder from one of the managers wanting to shake my hand and that is the last thing I remember. Apparently I was hit. My understanding is that it was a spectator. I woke up maybe five minutes later. I was frightened. I didn’t know what had happened. All I knew was I was lying on the ground and it was wet and cold. I wasn’t even aware Martin Conway had been hit by another individual when he came to help me.”

“It is absolutely shameful that this sort of thing has happened. I give up my time freely to officiate at these games. I am a volunteer in what is a pretty tough job and one that can feel very lonely at times. There’s a lot of shock. I believe it is the most serious incident that has ever happened, at least in Tyrone football.”

The Tyrone Ladies Gaelic Football Association issued a brief statement saying: “The county board roundly condemn the perpetrators of the assaults.”

All joking aside, its getting harder and harder to find refs in all sports. why people think think that it is acceptable to vilify and now actually physcially harm the ref is beyond me.

no-one goes out to play badly, no one goes out to ref badly, the level of commitment that the refs give is up there with the players in alot of instances what with training /courses and travel all at their own expense.

the level of ignorance about rules from players/managers and in particular the "supporters" has to be seen to be believed.

without refs you have no game, its time the clubs and authorities started to wake up and look after the refs a bit better.

what happened in Tyrone is an utter disgrace and jail time is in order for this cowardly attack.

As i said once and for all we should have professional referees. Paid a good weeks wages and not allowed to have any other job. If they make momentous c0ckups like Louth v Meath, Dublin v Kildare. They should be a review then on a monday of the games in Dublin. Any mistakes pointed out and then if they do make a major mistake they should be suspended for 2 weeks without pay and if they do it again give them the tin-tack and the umpires should be refs as well

AFAIK, they don't even have professional referees in professional soccer so I don't see why we need them in GAA.

Because they have to be answerable to someone. If their livelyhood depended on it i bet they would reconsider some of the decisions before they blow the whistle....If in doubt...play on.

No referee goes out to make bad decisions so I don't see how putting their livelihood at risk is going to improve things

They don't but they do make bad decisions and very bad decisions at that. If their wages depended on it they wouldn't be so whistle happy. They would consult their felloe professsional linesman/umpires before making difficult decisions.

db they're pro refs in soccer ! Referees have been professional for a number of years now time for the GAA to step up to mark on this issue and have a small band of approx 10 to 15 pro refs.

Even with the pro ref's, they wouldn't have a professional officiating at a Tyrone ladies match. I don't see how you can have amateur players and professional referees.

Jail the offender or offenders and ban the offending club from next years competition, this carry on is happening all too often and it's a handful of clubs where it is happening quite frequently.
