Just wondering do people still feel it necessary for the national anthem to be played before all GAA matches? I am pretty sure they started playing it up North before games to annoy the protestants then it spread down south. Do people think it should still take place in modern Ireland? They don't do it in other football and Rugby unless it is an international match, is it about time we moved with the times? I think we are all comfortable with our nationality these days.
It's not played before every GAA match......only inter county and county finals.........I think it adds to the occasion........the national anthem played before the national game still commands respect from the crowd.

if they're going to have Amhrán na bhFiann then do it right
playin a scratchy auld record of it over the tannoy before the louth-meath game was poor form; a televised game too
as if they were no bands in the whole of county Cavan that could have turned up and done a grand version of the anthem

It's people not letting it finish before they start roaring that bugs me and it seems this is the only place where that happens. It should be shown more respect in my opinion.

Gant, you're wrong about the anthem commanding respect. As Soothsayer says, the anthem is never allowed to play to the end by the crowd and it seems to get worse year after year with the cheering starting earlier every year. It's a disgrace and the GAA should make an announcement before the games to request that the anthem be played in full.

Sorry, Soothsayer.........I take your point, but I just can't help myself

My mask of a sophiscated, charming urbane and balanced individual is completely exposed as fraudulent when the championship comes around, quite disturbing really
