Updated (Monday 4pm): Dundalk are back in action after an eight-day rest when they travel to Tallaght Stadium for the third time this season to face league leaders Shamrock Rovers on Tuesday night (kick-off 8pm).
Team news: Ian Foster can welcome back Shane Guthrie after he was unavailable for last Monday’s visit of Saint Patrick’s Athletic due to the terms of his loan agreement but Dundalk are again without Eoghan Osborne (fractured tibia), Stephen McDonnell (knee), Jason Byrne (hamstring) and Stephen Maher (groin) while Michael Hector has left the club. Dean Bennett and Colin Hawkins (both ankle) remain doubtful.
Maher came through 45 minutes of a training game on Sunday afternoon, with the 23-year-old doing “very well” in his first taste of action in almost three months.
The Lilywhites have lost twice at the Dublin 24 venue this term, including last month’s Setanta Sports Cup final, and they go into this meeting in their worst form of the season having lost three in a row in the league, having previously gone eight unbeaten.
Last Friday’s game against Bray Wanderers was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at the Carlisle Grounds, with Foster taking in Rovers’ 4-0 win over Galway United in the capital, which maintained their three-point lead at the summit.
The Bray game has been rescheduled for Tuesday 28 June at the Carlisle Grounds (kick-off 7.45pm).
For those who can’t make it to the match, dundalkfc.com’s Laptop Live will begin at around 7.30pm.
Having refereed both encounters at Tallaght Stadium this season, Alan Kelly will again be the man in the middle.
Match Ticket Prices Adults €15 Students €10 Senior Citizens €10 Children U14 €7
The last league meeting between the sides came on 2 May at Oriel Park when Jason Byrne’s 37th-minute penalty cancelled out Karl Sheppard’s early opener as the sides played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in difficult conditions.
O'Neill rested the likes of Finn and Stevens on friday with this game in mind. The games v Dundalk have been tighter than they should have been this season so far imop. And to be fair to Dundalk they haven't just put 10 players behind the ball. 2-0 Hoops.

Hoops 2-0 is that the first 20 minutes? We have no team, well we have but we are only missing 8 first team players. So i think it's 5 or 6 we'll get beat.

I wouldn't back Dundalk +2 with your money and that's telling you the truth. No jinking i'm not having a bet. I wouldn't bet against Dundalk and i certainly wouldn't back a Dublin team against them

Following speculation that the player budget is set to be reduced, Dundalk Football Club wish to clarify that the club intend to maintain the current budget allocated for the season.
DUNDALK F.C.
STATEMENT
The decision to maintain the current player budget has been taken by the board, despite the challenging economic circumstances facing the club. Since the start of the season, most of the revenue streams have been lower then anticipated with league gates alone down by about €50,000 to date. While the Setanta Sports Cup run has been a great boost this additional gate income has been swallowed up by the fall off in league gates.
Sponsorship and Advertising along with Pitch Rental and Fund Raising income have also suffered a drop-off in the first half of the season. When the early season addition to the Playing Budget and the reduction in FAI prize money and supports are taken into account, these alone account for a variation of up to €140,000 in the overall club budget.
While the board recognise the extraordinary injury situation over the last number of months and the tremendous efforts of players and management over this period, further extending the playing budget is simply not a viable option in the current circumstances and would potential place the clubs future at risk.
Take Ten – Legends Fundraiser
The forthcoming Liverpool Legends match on July 23 provides an opportunity to address some of these financial imbalances and is seen as being crucial to moving the club finances back towards an even keel.
Supporters are asked to rally behind this initiative and to actively support this through selling tickets to the general public. If 500 supporters each sold 10 tickets to friends and acquaintances for this attractive fundraiser the difference would be enormous. Ticket bundles are available now from the Oriel Park office.
“Future is Bright, but we are at a Watershed”
Ciaran Bond, Finance Director of Dundalk FC commented “ The club are ambitious to be able to compete at the top end of the league and are making strong progress towards that reality.
The decision to maintain the budget is a brave step in the circumstances. Quite simply we are at a stage where we can’t afford to increase the budget and if we were more prudent we would reduce it. But releasing players who are the future of the club is not the way to achieve the progress that we want. If we can balance the books this season we are moving towards a much stronger position with the club debt decreasing and a fine young team being developed.
We are at a watershed – we need to be able to pay our way over the rest of the season and to do this we need supporters to row in behind the club and support the fundraiser efforts.
The Liverpool Legends match is crucial to this and we are asking supporters to take and sell tickets for this match. Adults tickets are €10 and children only €5. Even for people who are not able to attend the match buying a ticket is a practical means of supporting the club through this difficult period.
The future of the club is bright and to be able to consistently challenge for the major honours in the seasons ahead is realistic. But to realise those ambitions we need the supporters and the people of the region to respond to the immediate financial challenges that face the club

I don`t remember you mentioning you were a Lilywhite before AD. I can appreciate where you`re coming from here. You can only comment on what you see with your own eyes and believe to be the case. In Dundalks case, a potentially good season is unwinding. I thought we were very unlikely to win tonight but as usual I was wrong. Nothing to do with being disloyal.

After battling past Linfield and Malta Hibernians Dundalk were delighted to be paired with Glasgow Celtic in the second round. Although the attempts to persuade Celtic to play the first leg in Oriel Park failed Dundalk officials remained optimistic.
According to the late Jim Malone “It’s the draw we wanted. We reckoned Celtic, Forest or Hamburg so we have really landed on our feet. I’m quite confident that our team is good enough to get a fair result in Scotland and ensure a big crowd for our home game”.
For this tie Dundalk’s injury problems had become critical. Hilary Carlyle was injured representing the League of Ireland in a 2-1 win over New Zealand and McConville, Dunning, Keely, Muckian, Daly and Mick Lawlor were all very doubtful for the game but were all in the 16 man squad. The only boost that Jim McLaughlin received was the news that Jimmy Dainty, who hadn’t played since the the Cup Final, had agreed to return to the club to help out.
When the Dundalk team reached their hotel on the eve of the match a piper was playing a lament. This appeared to be an apt comment on Dundalk’s chances on avoiding a mauling. Although Celtic had just lost their unbeaten record in the Scottish league the previous Saturday against Morton, Jim McLaughlin was not seeing that as a good omen. “That was the worst thing that could have happened. They will be out to make us suffer. We have grown up in Europe. We made mistakes like in the away game in Eindhoven and we have paid heavily for them. But this is probably the best team that Dundalk has ever had. We are vastly experienced with players who will not freeze at the enormity of the task and I am reasonably confident that we can frustrate Celtic.”
In the event, Dundalk’s team of near cripples played possibly the greatest game ever by an Irish team in Europe. Celtic went ahead after only 4 minutes when Keely fouled Pat McCluskey on the left side of the penalty area. Davy Proven took the free kick and Roddie McDonald headed into the roof of the net from 6 yards. Celtic doubled their lead after 32 minutes when McCluskey skillfully eluded Keely and shot low into the right corner from 12 yards. Celtic were still celebrating when Jimmy Dainty made a fine run up the right. His cross found an unmarked Cathal Muckian who headed powerfully past Latchford. Unfortunately for Dundalk, Celtic responded immediately when Tommy Burns carved the Dundalk defence open to smash in Celtics third.
At half time a mauling still looked on the cards. But there were signs that Dundalk had not just come to make up the numbers. After 55 minutes Danny McGrain underhit a backpass to Latchford was intercepted by Liam Devine but the goalkeeper saved luckily with his feet. On the hour Tommy McConville cleared a Vic Davidson header off the line and Blackmore reacted superbly to save from Roy Aiken on the rebound.
The key moment came in the 61st minute with the introduction of Mick Lawlor in place of Terry Daly. 5 minutes later Dermot Keely played a long ball out of defence. Mick Lawlor knocked it down to Flanagan who played it back to Lawlor who had beaten the offside trap. With Latchford advancing Lawlor chipped him from 40 yards to score on the best goals ever seen in Parkhead. Dundalk should have drawn the match but Liam Devine shot wide with the goal at his mercy in the 74th minute. Ritchie Blackmore, who had another outstanding match, made the save of the match in the 80th minute from a Proven header. After that Celtic lost heart and Dundalk held out for a 3-2 defeat.
At the end of the match the entire Dundalk squad ran onto the middle of the pitch and received an ovation from the 33,000 attendance, including the 500 or so Dundalk fans who made the trip. Leo “Pop” Flanagan was acknowledged as being the man of the match but most of the credit was reserved for Jim McLaughlin for achieving such an incredible result with such a half fit team. After the game he admitted that he had almost quit the job only two weeks previously due to business commitments.

Anaglogs apologies if you thought I was having a pop. I wasn't. You seem genuine in your appraisal of the game. Just fed up listening to the usual yahoos in bookies over the years say 'sure he's a certainty' etc, even though they don't back it themselves. Or a photo finish where their horse has clearly won and they say 'I think the other one got up'.
