A nice afternoon was had up in Leopardstown yesterday with a competitive card.
Race 1) Manaaqeb (8/1). Didn't make it there in time but from the in running betting it looked like the fav Rock On Ciara (9/4) flattered to decieve. I am told Bolger's mare made all under the very useful Ronan Whelan. There is no one better at readying one for a metropolitan handicap than Bolger. 3 duck eggs, first time in a handicap, and up she flew.
Race 2) Teolane (6/4) Another front running performance from the very well backed (11/4 am) Bolger filly. She nicked 5 lengths out the gate and scampered home. Bolger breeding through and through. The Albany Stakes next. The O'Brien jolly Secretary Of State (4/5) plugged on at the one pace for second.
Race 3) Bewitched (6/1) Charles O'Brien's very consistent filly came from off the pace to swoop late and fast as the race looked to be fought out by the jolly Zoffany (7/4) and the frustrating Glor Na Mara. This must have been Johnny's first winner in the Coolmore colours since he moved to the Oxx stable. It was good to see Jacqueline O'Brien in attendance too.
Race 4) Fame And Glory (3/10f) Jamie Spencer this time riding for his old bosses Coolmore rode a typical Spencer race from behind with his usual confidence. He came there easy to cut down the main dangers Rite Of Passage and Nebula Storm but had to be kept up to his work to fend off the rag Vivacious Vivienne. The journalists spent 10 minutes with O'Brien but learnt nothing extra than what his wife had tweeted a few hours earlier.
Race 5) False Economy (9/1) Seamie had this one towards the rear but came through nicely in the last furlong to beat the staying on Keep It Cool. Proven at the distance this one was nicely backed in from 12/1. The well backed jolly Greenbelt Star (3/1+ into 7/4) never looked likely.
Race 6) Strandfield Lady. (6/1) A standing dish at Leopardstown the very promising apprentice Sam James bided his time and challenged up the centre of the track to hold the very genuine Citizenship who could be one for Bellewstown. Well backed too from 8/1 plus. Harry Rogers wouldn't say no to a few more like this one who is a grad ride for the apprentices. A bad day for Berry who never struck a blow on his second consecutive jolly Dearest Girl (4/1).
Race 7) Apache. (4/7f) WMFB's theory yet again being borne out. 5/6 am Joseph O'Brien never had to move a muscle as he reeled in the flattering Oxx horse Long Journey Home. This Gallileo late developer will surely go on to things better.
