A bit of a push for this on RTE recently is good to see. Very simple, make an effort to buy Irish produce that may be a little more expensive than the large supermarkets but is fresher and so is better in tatse and quality in the large. Most importantly it saves rural Ireland going under and thus keeps city Ireland healthy. Overall the money stays in Ireland and the heart and soul of Ireland remains in the hands of the Irish rather than some greedy fat cat chainstore owner. It would be very easy for them to lower their price on Irish products or give a little more in buying from the Irish producer. Buy fresh Irish chicken rather than a week old one 1 or 2 euros cheaper. It will all come back in the long run and sure it saves a long drive to Newry.

What about Dunnes Stores - their slogan is "the difference is, we're Irish" so they've got to be good, no?

Go to any dairy section in any supermarket and the Danone brand dominates all others.
Seriously, is there something wrong with the Irish cow or something? Great programme from RTE. Real eye opener. |

I am an amateur chef and love the taste of fresh local products. I take pride in my cooking, I get meat from butchers, veg from greengrocer and bread from the baker. Supermarkets provide very poor quality stuff - tasteless. Local farmers markets provide value and great ingredients. Only fresh things not indegineous I get are tomatoes and cheese. IRISH products are in great demand worldwide(Irish beef and Irish smoked salmon especialy). We have the best calf, and lambs liver, black pudding, lamb, potatoes, scallops, oysters and g u i n n e s s

One of the more interesting facts of that program was that where a Tesco opens up in a town and "creates" 100 jobs , the net loss yes loss of jobs to the local economy is 150.
In a small county like mayo there are at least 6 tescos and more on the way, tescos now poping up in small towns like ballinrobe and swinford and just pushing all the local small businesses to the wall. aldi and lidl will employ the same amount of staff as your local centa/spar/costcutter and turnover 10 times as much and all this is then sent back to germany. people just thinking about the short term here zipifred, long term they will reap the reward of tesco et all raping them blind when they have all their competition gone. |

Giving money to Tescos/ dunnes for produce they buy cheap in foreign countries to buy you processed rubbish or preserved meet not only diminishes taste and nutrition but it takes the money out of the Irish pocket, that money is not spent in the country and the Irish farmer suffers greatly. How does giving this money to line an already filthy rich chainstore owner pocket make it good in long run. Not everything can be bought Irish but with a little more thought and care in your buying habits is bound to come back to you and perhaps keep your friends and family in the country, i thought that was the Irish way or has that died completely already since the euro now 10 years in being.

Zipifred the point im making is that they are not good in the long run, all they do is put smaller competitors out of businessand screw their suppliers to the wall while pocketing the profits which are sent back to the uk. nothing good comes with the arrival of a tesco store. |

i admit i usually dont go out of my way to buy irish but was baffled angry and unaroused to see the only freekin spring onions/scallions in Tesco were from Mexico ...WTF ...did not purchase and it did cause me to reflect on the s hit that is globalism.......
