reading his article in the sunday times brought back some great memories....i remember sitting in mc wees pub in kildare town many moons ago ..there was a load of us lads having a few pints and the craic ,when out of the blue in walked this english guy and sat down beside me ..there weren't to many engish guys riding out on the curragh in the 70s i can tell you ...well he tried to break into our conversation but i ignored him as i thought he was a bit mouthy....after about 20 mins i decided to have a chat with him .....after 5 mins of listening to him i wished i'd never set eyes on him...he confirmed every pre concived idea i had about him...
he told me he had started in toolers and he had at on a horse that was real special....he said it was going to win its bumper on the sat and then go and ..you're not going to belive this..then it would win at royal ascot ....i smiled as politely as i possibly could and told myself what am i doing listening to this muppet ...he'd only been with o'toole a few weeks and here he was telling US what was what ..the cheek of the guy ..for a laugh i said to him how much should i have on this cert ...he looked me straight in the eye and said every penny you can lay your hands on...and the name of this cert please....BALIOS ....it won its bumper at evens and went to royal ascot and won under j lindley at 33/1....after all these years i cant remember that english lads name ..but if by some miracle you're reading this take a bow you genius ....

Yeah great story about him buying the dog at 4 years old, something that you'd just never see today.

i remember a friend of mine having a massive bet on one of micks davy lad , at leopardstown ..his bet was £5,000 at 4/6 ...to put that into perspective the average national wage was about £38 a week ....i wont name him on here as his son is now a trainer and just might read this ...it won btw..but i was to find him getting sick at the back of the stand ...that cured him of gambling .......mick said the result was never in doubt....

indeed, nothing worse than that feeling I sometimes get when I know I've just had a powerfully stupid bet, often meaning I'll be short for the next week.
