Ive been going through this race for sometime now and have a decent record over the years, although there no great outsiders i have it down too these 3 in that order.
1..backstage
2..oscar time
3..the midnight club
The midnight club ticks many boxs but is very short now for me, id rather be with oscar time at 16-1 but im very very keen on Backstage. Love the way he travelled through the race last year and can see him creeping away with Carberry riding. I have to say i think he has an outstanding chance for G.E and has won his last 2 point to points.
Any thoughts on these 3 would be most welcome.

2. Frankie Figg 3. Backstage A swinger up for Gordon with NR loving the course in the Foxhunters last year until Simon McGonagle was knocked out of the saddle at the canal turn, will appreciate being back on the good ground and the rest is in the lap of the God's. Frankie Figg is a ridiculously uncharacteristic sentimental pick but he adores Aintree and it will be great to see him up there and jumping them silly from the off. |

I expect a lot of grief for expressing this opinion!
I don`t think a horse should be allowed run their final prep for a big race between the flags. It`s not the 1950`s. There`s more than enough prep races under rules ffs! |

Wouldn't be against that at all GS - likewise I wouldn't have pro trainers running horses in UK Hunter Chases.

An opinion I`d respect PDA.
It just bugs me that this horses last run on a course was last July in Galway yet he`s run twice since. Clearly Elliots not doing anything he`s not allowed to but it just makes a mockery of the game that he can alternate and virtually nobody gets to see the thing run. Yet he`s nearly favourite for the richest race of the year! Nonsense. And as for licensed trainers and hunter chases. Pure greed. |

I can understand a licensed trainer running a Maiden at Bandon or Loughbrickland etc. but the Hunter Chase thing bugs me - particularly when the ballot regulations favour the rules trainers (at least in the UK) over genuine pointers.
The horse I'm involved in would likely be balloted out of any HC we entered here in the UK on the basis of not having won a race of any description whilst a 140 rated handicapper with other options on the track would get preference. Also big bookmakers complaining about the lack of runners in UK Hunter Chases - the main reason for this is a change in rules so that every horse on a rules card needs a stable, whilst the Hunter Chase is the first race to be balloted so you could have 30 declarations and 24 balloted out and then the racecourses and bookmakers off course complaining that they don't get the runners. |
