Workforce on target for Gold Cup return

BY STUART RILEY 11:57AM 23 MAR 2011

WORKFORCE, last year's Derby and Arc winner, could make his first trip to Ireland for his seasonal reappearance in the Tattersalls Gold Cup atthe Curragh on May 22.

The 1m2½f contest, won by Fame And Glory last year, was nominated as the likely starting point by Teddy Grimthorpe - racing manager to Khalid Abdullah.

"I still have to speak to Michael, but the Gold Cup is looking like the place we will start him. We'll have to see how the horse is and how he's working but the plan would be to go to Ireland, rather than Epsom for the Coronation Cup," Grimthorpe told At The Races.

Grimthorpe also revealed that Abdullah's top Classic hopes Frankel and Helleborine will both take in a prep race before their assaults on the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas respectively.

"Frankel has not been asked to do much so far but we're delighted with the way he wintered. He's filled out and if anything he's lengthened. The plan with him is to take in the Greenham.

"Helleborine will go for the 1,000 Guineas but she will have her prep race in the Prix Imprudence at Maisons-Laffitte on April 7."

On Midday, Grimthorpe continued: "She's really blossomed again. She will probably make her comeback at York in the Middleton in May. The Breeders' Cup is always an option with her."

Last season's Yorkshire Cup winner Manifest could also make his seasonal return at York, though plans for him are more open. Grimthorpe said: "We gave him a good break after the Gold Cup, there was nothing major wrongbut he was a little sore.

"Henry doesn't think he wants two and a half miles so he probably won't go down the Gold Cup route again. He could go for something like the Yorkshire Cup, the Hardwicke or the Corination Cup."

Decreased in stature in recent years. Once upon a time it was deemed the perfect springboard for the best middle distance performers. Hope he runs. Would be a good boost for the race.

Hopefully here too.
The horse worked at the Curragh on Sunday and was only 5th in his gallop.
Not sure if he was asked to do much or how relevant it was but he could need more time with him.

They never asked him for anything in his gallop the other day, just a day out for him i'd imagine, he is a beautiful looking racehorse

Usually its quite easy to predict where AOB is sending horses but after the Hays are buying into Horses it put the whole thing up in the air.

Jim McGrath said he is being aimed at Royal Ascot and then king George and then returning to OZ for a http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/horseracing/8108873/So-You-Think-set-to-join-Aidan-OBrien-at-Ballydoyle-in-40m-deal.html3rd cox plate

And he will win half the track.
They have their horses super fit this season. Maybe they needed galloping companions for their Meydan horses.
