I`m not passing myself as a good judge but I`ve been following him intently since he went over fences. And I picked him really well too until today!
Thought the ground would be too soft for him and it probably was, but what I forgot to factor in was the awful competition he faced. Terrible Hennessy. Nicholls should be kicking himself tonight, because either POD or WAF could have won that race imo. Take nothing away from Kempes. He`s a real trier and there are far worse bets at C`ham, but Mullins could have run him there last year and didn`t after his poor Supreme run. I don`t think he traveled over/ settled well so that could have been the reason and it could also be the reason why he wont go/ win the GC. If he goes/travels/settles then he has a fair chance imo. |

Ya good points made. But older horse now and there is only 1 gold cup. I do agree todays race not the greatest but just liked way he jumped and quickened with head between his chest.

I think this years Hennessey was the worst in terms of quality ever. On top of that I thought Joncol was below his best, his jumping poor . In spite of that he was still there at the last. Glencove Marina - a long way from top class.
On the other hand , Kempes will be improve for better ground but will need to. Why is it that the English trainers have not copped that our 3 mile division is short of quality and there is easy money to be had?. |

Thought PC went far too soon on China Rock yesterday.

Young enough & still improving over fence but probably would need to improve a stone to trouble IC and the like.

Hard to see how Kempes could ever win another grade one race never mind a Cheltenham Gold Cup.That was the worst Hennessy ever run Money Trix broke a leg China Rock went off too fast Joncol was below par The Listener is now retired....Kempes wont even run into a place in Cheltenham.

I don't know what to make of the Hennessy to be honest. I think it was an awful renewal, Joncol didn't jump as well as usual, ran free early and didn't perform to his best, agree with Down that Carberry probably went for home too far out, Money Trix (rip) broke down, Glencove Marina (rip) is decent on his day but would get lapped in a Gold Cup, Trafford Lad has not seemed to regain his form after injury and The Listener has been retired.
However i thought Kempes won very easily and is still improving and with better ground likely at the festival he can improve further, however he needs to. I would not be backing him for the Gold Cup but there are question marks about a lot of those at the top of the market so it's not inconceivable that he could improve enough to be in the mix and at least we know he is in good form. |

Carberry probably decided to find out for himself if China Rock was a live danger to Pandorama.

Even if Carberry held on bit longer, hard to see him winning as kempes done it easily. Kempes was decent on flat so don't agree with point how he could win any grade 1, the horse always had serious potential just did not transfer it. I still think you could do alot worse none at top of the market appeal. It was a poor race Saturday but he still had to go and win.

Kempes won a grade one hurdle at Punchestown as a novice, he also won last seasons 3mile novice grade one at Punchestown. One could hardly say he has come from nowhere, he had a bad experience at Celtenham as a novice hurdler and it has taken him a while to get over it.
