Two wins from his first three rides in Britain, including one when beating AP McCoy, means this week will live forever in the memory of 19-year-old Kielan Woods. The teenager looks a rider to have on your side, especially in the immediate future when new boss, trainer Charlie Longsdon, makes use of his 10lb claim.
Although he only rode three winners under rules in Ireland, Woods, recommended to Longsdon by former jockey Paul Flynn, has a technique polished while riding over 70 winners on the pony racing circuit. The initial wins, however, also ended almost a month's frustration for Longsdon fighting delays in getting the BHA to hand Woods a licence to ride. In the end, it needed Longsdon to personally get in touch with John Smith, head of the licencing department, who 'could not have been more helpful.' But the trainer was less complimentary about some of Smith's underlings. 'I'm afraid there is a severe lack of organisation and the person we spoke to was particularly unhelpful,' reflected Longsdon on a bureacrat who had been 'too important for his own good.
