Bank of Ireland customers are experiencing problems withdrawing cash because the bank's computer system is down.

The system for all online and telephone banking is down, while Bank of Ireland customers are also having difficulty withdrawing cash from ATMs.

A spokesperson said it is an 'unforeseen temporary technical issue', which the bank is working to resolve.

While branches are open, there maybe some 'minor restrictions on cash withdrawals', the spokesperson said.

Tellers cannot access the up-to-date balance on customers' accounts.

Bank of Ireland said all ATMs are operating normally but with a restricted cash service for BoI cardholders.

It said some customers may be unable to conduct point-of-sale transactions but Bank of Ireland credit card transactions are unaffected.

Customers attempting to withdraw larger amounts of money from ATMs – up to €400 - have been told they have exceeded their daily limit, even in cases where they have not made a withdrawal. There is restricted access to smaller amounts of cash.

The spokeswoman said the problem was caused by an “unforeseen technical issue” which disrupted access to internet and phone banking. This meant that ATMs were working offline and did not have up-to-date information about current balances. As a result, the teller machines severely reduced the amount of cash dispensed to each customer.

The spokeswoman said the bank hoped to have the problem sorted out shortly, but declined to provide more detailed information about the issue which has caused the disruption.

“It’s definitely a technical issue, and has nothing to do with money,” she said.

The amount ATMs are currently dispensing varies according to the customer, she said.

The glitch has also affected withdrawals from bank branches but credit card purchases with Bank of Ireland cards are not affected.

“We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience they are experiencing and wish to assure them that we are working with our IT partners to ensure that all services are reinstated as a priority

I withdrew €100 this evening and got the auld balance advice slip. I thought I was a few thousand better off in reality than the advice slip showed.  I'm hoping the advice slip was wrong.

Or did Lenihan introduce a muppet tax that was automatically deducted from my account. Shocked

People who withdrew will just end up with overdrawn balances (if they took more than they had in the a/c) and be charged through the nose for the priviledge of feeling like they got free money for a while. Silly

THE hundreds of people who took wads of cash from faulty ATMs across the capital will have to pay back every cent, and more.

Overdraft fees and other charges will be stacked to the bills of everyone who took money from cash machines as a Bank of Ireland glitch resulted in too much being given out.

The dash for cash had queues forming at ATM machines as people heard stories of extra money being dispensed to account holders.

On a day when the Budget was sucking money from people's pockets, a glitch in Bank of Ireland cash machine systems meant people could withdraw more money than they had in their accounts.

The news spread like wildfire on Twitter and other social networks, which led to long queues forming at many machines throughout the country.

But today those account holders who over-indulged their need for ready cash faced potential financial hangovers as the Bank of Ireland declared all "unauthorised" withdrawals were fully recorded and would have to be repaid.

In Coolock in Dublin, queues formed quickly at two ATMs outside the local Bank of Ireland as well as at cash machines in the Northside Shopping Centre, petrol stations and other outlets. Gardai went to the local bank at one stage as the queues lengthened.

Ugly

Gardai went to a number of other queue locations such as James Street in the city amid fears of ugly scenes.

Bank of Ireland has insisted that customers were not being given "a free-for-all".

A bank spokeswoman told the Herald: "A couple of urban myths are surfacing, there have been various reports from various parts of the city that people are getting €40 when they requested €20 or €100 when they requested €50."

She confirmed some cardholders were getting money from ATMs even if they do not have those funds in their accounts.

But she insisted that ATMs were not invariably dispensing different amounts to those requested.

The situation arose when computer systems failed which resulted in the bank going off-line.

"It means the system can't actually read your actual balance, and it makes a judgment of what you should have based on the level of activity on your account," she said.

"Each card-holder has certain flexibility on their limit, and each customer has a different offline limit."

Those customers who withdrew more money than they had in their accounts will be charged accordingly, she stressed.

"It happens all the time where people are allowed to go slightly over. Are people allowed access to cash? Yes they are, but it's very restricted.

"It's not a free-for-all. The customer will pay -- the records will show who is drawing out what and how much."

Heard a few stories today a few people got a few grand out, There the people I feel sorry for, there statements will be horrible to look at, Lukily I never got anything of the sort I didnt take anything that was already in my account, but I have to laugh a the BOI statement when they suggest that money was not spitting out this is a lie, think there trying to save face, I got 300 and my slip says I took out 20 and my mates were the same so I know there lying, but if there is 3 tonne took out of account then so be it, it was worth a try , as one of my mates said its a couple of hundred to get them thru xmas its a loan they wld never have gotten if they went in and asked for it.

Anyone that banks with BOI would want to be logging onto their accounts fairly lively and start reconciling transactions. There are debits on my account that have nothing to do with. The €20 figure that people were talking about all week is there 4 times. There are bank charges X 6 in the last week that have no relevance
