Brian Lenihan will announce this afternoon hikes of 4c on a litre of petrol and 2c on diesel, as well as cuts to dole and child benefit payments.

A 5% cut to all welfare payments, bar pensioners and the most vulnerable, will see the dole and other payments cut by around €8 or €9 a week, with child benefit being slashed by €10 a month per child, and double that for the third child.

Reform of taxes will take place, with reliefs and avoidance schemes to be closed.

Many of the lower paid, who have not had to pay tax previously, will be brought into the net gradually.

The controversial €10 air travel tax will not be scrapped, but it will be cut to just €2

I thought it was an excellent speech. I totally agree that this should be a 6 year plan with first year cuts at 4.5b. Gives much better chance of growth.
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby December 8, 2010 11:39 PM GMT
In his speech in the Dail in response to the Min for Finances budget, he provided no solutions Zipifried. He took the cheap and easy option of having a go at an opposition member who will be contesting his own constituency. Everyone knows Coughlan is out of her depth, but he wastes most of his speech pointing out what people already knew. Even his own party colleague had to tell him to calm down at one point.

His rants may appeal to you Zipifried, but most people are more interested in real solutions.
He mumbled on tonight about taking money of high earners and leaving "The Poor" (A real over used cliche these days) alone.
Pity he doesn't realise after 2 years of recession that there is simply not enough of them left in order to fue his partys fantasy budget

Quoted from the Sinn Fein proposels in the Irish times.....

Instead, Mr Morgan outlined a six-year plan to achieve the target. He said the Sinn Féin plan was based on a prediction for economic growth of 3 per cent per annum

This country will struggle towards ~0.7% growth next year and they just presume it will average out at 3% over the following years?
Its not even worth laughing at.
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby December 8, 2010 11:41 PM GMT
and 0.7% is being optimistic in some quarters

Diamond' Joe Quimby - It does make sense that the dole payers, minimum paid, will spend all the money back into the economy. The wealthy will go on vacation 4 times a year, and we all know when you go on holiday, you splash out a lot more money. I would have liked him to go more into the  specifics of his cuts, like the 1b wealth tax.
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby December 9, 2010 12:18 AM GMT

You almost make the dole sound like a profession in itself Happy So the Government uses tax payers money to fund dole recepients so they can spend money? Surely you can see it would make more economic sense for these same people to find gainful employment at any level, in order that private sector companies(Wealth/Service creators) can pay their wages instead of the government.

I don't agree with the cut in the min wage by the way, but welfare has to be tackled. Its unavoidable.I do believe people have lost all understanding of what welfare is meant to be....to support those either physically or mentally (Both genuinely) unable to work long term and to support in the short term those who have lost employment.

The wealthy will go on vacation 4 times a year, and we all know when you go on holiday, you splash out a lot more money.

They could go on 10 holidays a year which i doubt but it still doesnt detract from the fact, their numbers have dwindled since 2008 in a  major way

but the  majority of people on the dole want to find any means of work. The jobs aren't there.
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby December 9, 2010 12:30 AM GMT
Of course you are right (though i still believe there is a small element who still look down their noses at certain jobs) , but I still believe a balance of work incentive has to be introduced. Factoring in cost of living, its almost a loss maker at this point to go to work compared to staying at home and get the dole. That has to change and cutting the min wage was completely the wrong thing to do. In this atmosphere, that extra euro an hour will go straight to the employers pocket, it wont increase employment imho.
Report chingachgook December 9, 2010 12:36 AM GMT
They should've lowered the dole considerably when the jobs were plentiful over the last 10
years to get the fookin scroungers off their ar5es.
Report Vasco08 December 9, 2010 11:46 AM GMT
There is an enormous amount of wealth remaining in the country est. 200 billion. As for non-domiciled tax exiles: tell them to pay appropriate level of taxes or take their passports back and tell them to fcuk off for good out of it. Bono that includes you you scrounger
Report vinnie_roe December 9, 2010 1:36 PM GMT
chingachgook - I agree, and when we come out of the recession, that is when I would cut the dole, but not now when someone from the private sector has lost his job on around 40k a year, and with the unpleasant nature of having to go these social welfare offices, and some public sector cow asking him if he's looking for work - and to top it of, a cut in his dole before christmas. They should be going after middle to high earners who will still spend in are economy but maybe not as much in other countries.

it is not your ireland diamond,  look at the state of the place.  He had many points you fail to mention. Give them a chance, they are the only ones who speak straight, there is no miracle cure but i am sure the other parties will lie through their teeth to the gullible masses and sell it in a pill form from your local drug store at max rate without any reduction  with a medical card.  It won't work of course but as long as their is a fortune to be made and sure they can always convince the patient they are actually just mental so they won't get any ideas on resolutions of their own,  if that fails sure lock the scroungers up,  they know nothing sure.
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby December 9, 2010 7:37 PM GMT
Thats fair enough Zipifried, respect your point.

when we come out of the recession, that is when I would cut the dole,

but sad thing is the country cannot afford high rates of dole when unemployment is high. It just doesnt add up.
Report Giant Strides December 9, 2010 7:48 PM GMT
But "when" we come out of recession, the cost of everything will obviously rise again, because we live in an incredibly greedy country.
The dole increased year on year because of the cost of living here. It wasn`t just a property bubble.

In truth the Private Sector raped this country
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby December 10, 2010 12:09 AM GMT
How so?
Report observerirl December 10, 2010 12:35 AM GMT
Property inflation created a situation whereby those in traditional sound jobs were unable to afford to buy a house. Property inflation was driven and fuelled by the private sector through the easy, almost at demand request for outrageous sums of capital being met by an equally rapacious and avaricious banking sector. Jeez it was a double whammy for the banks, they lend to the developer at x% and to the borrower at x%plusy%. But all were chasing the same rainbow. Increased house prices and general price increases for everything provided by private enterprise led to a demand for unsustainable salary increases from the public sector who wanted to buy their own house and enjoy most of what their private sector friends were enjoying. Of course Public Sector salaries were increased in line with the already increased private sector wages so we could all go for multi holiday, second house syndrome and many other materialistic requiremnts synonomous with this country in the last ten years. Christ i'm off to bed and if theres no racing soon I'll start taking life a lot more serious. I'd rather not
