He will return to Newmarket and not his home in Ireland after his two rides at Kempton on Saturday.

The 38-year-old has been based with Aidan O'Brien for 14 years, landing 11 Group 1 victories for the champion trainer, includingfour Irish Classics, and often spends the winter in India or Saudia Arabia - or riding over hurdles.

This winter, though, Heffernan will be doing none of the above and will instead sample life in Britain.

"It is something that I have always wanted to do, ride in England, and I think that I'm now ready to do it," he said.

He begins his temporary British freelance career on the John Murphy-trained Top Spin in the Listed Williamhill.com Wild Flower Stakes at Kempton on Saturday.

He rides Born To Excel for the same trainer in the 0-75 handicap over 1m.

Will he ride horses on merit or ride in such a manner as to assist  the chances of another horse, as has been his modus operandi in England on previous visits?

I think he will be well supported throughout the winter.
Not having to set the pace for a stablemate etc will mean that the UK will see what a fine horseman he is.
Why he is not being considered for the main Ballydoyle role is a little surprising given the calibre of jockey that they seem intent on using.
It is a pity that he did not decide to go back riding over hurdles in Ireland this winter as he was very good when he did dip his toes in the water a few years ago.

Very ordinary rider and certainly no gent.As low as anyone that ever had anything to do with that Coolmore mafia and that's some recommendation .Will fit in like a glove on the all weather in Britain, and he will have found his level in every way

I'd say his motivation for riding on the AW has as much to do with the pink button as any career milestone

and my personal opinion is,

not that many care's is!

if cod get's the ballydoyle no.1 , jp o brien will be ahead of him , and thus heff will be no.3 in real terms........ maybe he's looking to move on and seeing what options he might have accross the water, esp the sucess irish jockeys have had  in the uk considering the like's of queally, ahearn and m. lane.

it's just an idea.

Lustrumm is on the ball here.Little Seamie will do very nicely in England thank you very much,he would be just as talented as Eddie Ahearn, and given the opportunities then Seamie wont make many if any mistakes.

Saying somebody is not a gent is a personal opinion murphyjust and certainly not actionable. You know Seamie do you?,ye lot seem to have forgotten the bit about him not riding for punters down in Gowran,he couldnt give two hoots about ye so why is anybody up in arms here defending this little gentleman.

He rides for Aidan O' Brien [;)]...... and a few more small ones in England, I didn't like his comment after the Drumbeat incident last year, but I don't know him at all. He was involved in a few skirmishes with that horse trying to break its maiden however

I've emptied the boys' Bank Accounts workrider and sent the whole lot to the Bohemians!

They're only 5 my two little lads but they would have blown the lot on booze and loose women later in life anyway - so I've done them a favour! Laugh

He looked very weak against Hayley Turner when she beat him in a race  at Ascot last year in the Shergar Cup meeting, and yes I am talking through my pocket.
