AN aggrieved viewer of RTE's The Frontline has complained that the station demanded his political affiliations after he questioned how it justified its TV licence fee.
RTE has received dozens of complaints over its coverage of Taoiseach Brian Cowen's historic state-of-the-nation address.
One viewer, who asked RTE to "justify" the licence it charges following the below-par political coverage -- was disgusted when he was asked to detail his political leanings.
He told the Herald: "I sent in a question to The Frontline regarding the TV licence fee. My question was responded to with a questionnaire asking for my personal details and political affiliations.
"I am a citizen and am affiliated with the interests of our country's survival. My question was simply why we, the taxpayer, have to pay a licence fee to supplement the wages of our political pundits."
RTE insists the confusion arose because the viewer received the standard automated response which is sent to all viewers who email thefrontlineaudience@rte.ie.
A spokesperson said the viewer's questions have now been forwarded to RTE's information department and a response will be issued to the viewer.
She said this email address is for viewers who wish to apply for audience tickets on The Frontline.
But the viewer insisted: "I was simply commenting on the fact that only Vincent Browne from TV3 seemed to be interested in putting the hard questions to Brian Cowen and not any of the RTE crowd, for whatever reason.
"When I sent in the question it was not responded to -- just questions about myself and my political motivations

The BBC's coverage of this crisis has been way simply way better than our national broadcaster. They were streets ahead.
Any Fellow paying the TV licence must be tearing their hair out!
Do you lads in the uk pay a tv fee or what way does it work over there.

The BBC also has a tendency to stress the Government line on things, especially in times of crisis. I suppose state broadcasters are bound to operate as the mouthpiece of the Government, no matter how much they protest their neutrality. It would be interesting to see RTE's coverage of crises in UK. I bet it would be more balanced than the BBC's.
Not so much this past week but I can confirm from one of the researchers on Morning Ireland that RTE were gagged in the week leading up to the announcement of the bailout. The question to AHERne on the week in Politics was a ready up. What the Government/RTE did not realise is that the ECB were leaking in the meantime to SKY,BBC and the rest of Europe as well as the financial stations.
This leak of course was to force the hand of the Irish to take a bailout on their terms to prevent the contagion (as they are calling it now) spreading.
The tide is turning now though and my only fear is that the 6.7% interest is a leak for a ready up so Lenihan can announced it at 6.2% tomorrow night and announce it a roaring succcess. Remember the 4 year plan which is only a tiny bit of this pie is based on 3.5% and aLMOST 3% GROWTH.
