This has puzzled me for a while now and perhaps one of the forum cognoscenti can enlighten me.
It's about racing ....and race riding in particular .
My question is  - In what detailed respects is riding a winner of a Gr1 ,2 or 3 different from riding the winner of a selling handicap ,say .?
There seems to be an assumption made that it is somehow more meritorious to ride the winner of a Group race or other big money race than the winner of a humble maiden , claimer or low grade h'cap .
I cannot see any difference in the skills required to win any race  -but am prepared to be convinced otherwise.

Your right.  Same in soccer when a lower grade player does something special or scores a cracker he will not get the same credit as a world renowned player, however some jockeys are key to getting the most out of horses.  Timmy Murphy and Darryll Holland(to name but a few) are great horse men imo.  Top jockeys agents make sure they are on the right horse.  In higher grade races, tactics come into play, trainer will insist on running plan.

i remember asking bobby breasley the same question in 1972 , his answer was that it was a sence of achievement , knowing you had out thought the best .  he was a nh jockey and  rode the winner of the gold cup .

In essence there's no difference but in practice there is a lot when you take into account the greater pressures involved such as expectaion, finacial rewards & public exposure
