Great argument put forward there. O'Gara is not better. He came on the field when the Boks had replaced a lot of their players. His influence was greatly exaggerated. He had stringer supplying him ball rather than the donkey Reddan. He was extremely lucky not to throw an intercept try. The Boks had the game won and took their foot off the peddle. We are going backwards if we put this guy back in. Great man to bring on with 10-15 mins to go but Sexton has to to start the next day.

O'Gara is the master while Sexton is the apprentice!! Let the master play until he decides when he wants to retire!!

i understand the argument about sexton and the future but i think o'gara showed his undoubted class last night. He did change the game and i think the backs were more confident when he was on the field and along with stringer the team seemed to have a direction.
Also deserved to get his 100th cap in better circumstances |

In the rain id have ROG every time but in dry condition would be Sexton

Wrong match up. Stringer is playing the best rugby of his career imo and should be ahead of Reddan. Sexton has by far the better defence and should start but bringing on O'gara for last 30 is a decent tactic.
The lineout was routed .Best should take the rap. |

agreed. best is awful

Sexton for the future and now.
An Outhalf coming on against a tired defence has a chance to run ragged, Sexton came on against Munster in the Magners league game and changed the game when he came on. Sexton was one of our better performers in the tour down under and his defence stands out against O'Gara who is liable to missing tackles. |

Agree on Best, Sean Cronin is a very exciting player and I would love to see him get a proper chance at Ireland level.

It's not even a contest. There is a gulf in class frankly. Sexton is way ahead.
ROG possibly the worst defender in international rugby. Plays in the pocket which is 10 years out of date. Not capable of playing flat. Not capable of taking it up. Slower than Sexton. Runs poorer lines. I could go on. Now ROG may be the better kicker of the ball. But Sexton is also international class in this respect imo. The game is moving away from kicking any way. Watch how the Aussies play. The conditions yesterday were unusually poor, which meant playing progressive rugby was almost impossible. Cue ROG in ideal conditions for anti-rugby. With experience, Sexton will soon learn that sometimes pragmatism rules. He has the kicking game to play a territorial game anyway if need be. Yes ROG had a decent impact yesterday. However, the fact is he missed the crucial kick that a player at that level would expect to get at least 60% of the time. And with three minutes on the clock he kicked the ball out thus ending any hopes of victory. Hardly masterful game management! |

At the end of the day itcanbedone, it should all come down to who is the better kicker, there is 14 other men on the pitch to do all the other stuff.
If Sexton had to get that easier chance early on in the match it would have been a one point win for Ireland, where as if O'Gara had got that much harder conversion it would have been a draw. Overall: Sexton can play all he wants when O'Gara retires!!! |

Sexton is a much better all round footballer than O'Gara , bigger, stronger and playing behind a break even pack a better option than ROG .
Saturday we were behind the 8-ball most of the match pack wise , only improved when SA made a few late changes . Dan Carter would have been hard put to look anything above average behind our pack . The improvement late on to even up the 2 packs coincided with ROG coming on , and he improved our performance by keeping it simple , with a good bit of help from Stringer it must be allowed . As already pointed out by several contributors it is good to have 2 differing options at out half , so you can cut your cloth appropriately . O'Gara is a more consistent kicker too , which can be important especially at crucial stages late in a match . Reckon Kidney knows what he is doing , pity the front of the pack does not measure up as it is vital to the way the modern game works . |
