STAR-STUDDED cards in Down Royal and Navan look set to go ahead as planned on Saturday and Sunday, despite the flood warnings issued by Met Eireann across Ireland due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Tomas.
The tail-end of the storm is expected to hit the north-west coast over the weekend, producing high tides and winds of up to 100km per hour, which could lead to flooding in Dublin, Galway and coastal areas.
Rainfall is likely to reach 30mm in places during Sunday and Monday, but a Met Eirann spokesman was on Friday confident that Saturday's meeting at Down Royal, which sees Kauto Star clash with Sizing Europe in the JNwine.com Champion Chase, and Sunday's fixture at Navan, featuring the return of Champion Chase winner Big Zeb, would both escape the onslaught.
He said: "The rain will come in through the north west and spread east, but will not reach Down Royal until between 3pm and 6pm.
"There is the chance of a shower in Navan tomorrow, but it will pass quickly and they might escape the rain on Sunday until around 4pm. Once it's inthough it will be there until the best part of Monday is gone."
Down Royal manager Mike Todd changed the ground description on Friday to soft, yielding to soft in places on the hurdle course and yielding to soft, soft in places on the chase course.
Jockeys riding at the track on Friday described is as "genuinely soft" all over, but added the chase track was riding better than the hurdle track.
Navan manager Russell Ferris said: "If the forecast stays right, I have no concerns. Getting 11mm yesterday was more than expected and brought us from soft to heavy, but we've had a really dry day today."
The Met Eireann spokeman added that Limerick, which stages a seven-race card on Sunday and Monday, will be dry on Saturday, but could be hit by heavy rain as early as 2pm on Sunday.
Manager Russell Ferris said: "The forecast is changing all the time, I don't think anybody knows what's going to happen. There is fresh ground for the hurdles on Monday and I'm not concerned. It's on the yielding side of soft at the moment and we are due little rain tomorrow, which will give the track time to dry."
