Lads just wondering if anyone has experience of having a horse in training in Ireland and what the fees are like with each individual trainer?

I know from asking around that there are huge differences between yards. Conor O'Dwyer is charging €50 a day at present. Willie McCreery is €40 per day, but also has the extra €3.50 charge for using the Curragh. David Marnane is €45 per day. Charles Byrnes is €800 a month plus expenses or €1000 all in.

Paddy Neville is €800 a month. Davy Fitzgerald is €850. Recently there was an add in the Racing Post offering fees of €500 all in. This was from Mattie McDonagh in Galway.

Anyone have any other figures they could add? Hoping to compile a table of charges that might be useful to those hoping to keep a horse in training.

Smaller trainers are charging €25-27 a day, better known trainers are €35-40 a day and most charge for extras.

The €500 ad promised a lot but not sure how much will be delivered for €16 a day all in.

You can go cheap but you have to ask yourself what your horse is being fed and who is looking after it.

Thats always the worry, what you getting for your money. Advantage of small trainers hopefully who getting more attention. Any idea what kind of names are charging €25-€30 a day?

e50 a day is extortion. Presume thats all in. The magic potions are the killer! Whats charged when the horse is out of training is another sticking point. e30 a week for summer grass would be loads.

if the prices are correct as above,D.Fitzgerald seems good value imo

Thewhiteflag, paying for summer grass is no different from paying for training fees in that you sometimes get what you pay for. We pay a lot more than €4 a day for our grass but then the horses get a full MOT from an extremely good horseman who spends the summer working on the horses while they are on a break. That, to me, is working paying for as it's the one time during the year you can make real changes to them. It has worked well for us in identifying problems off season.

€1000 all in with Charles Byrnes is not bad.

Dessie McDonogh is normally good value and has a cracking set up....I had a horse there a few years ago and it was around €24/25 a day.

think willie is 1800 a month.

Just saying that some trainers charge whatever a day whether the horse is in or out of training. What do you mean by an MOT (wormer, copper?)! What kind of work do you do with NH horses while out of training? Improve jumping by schooling maybe? We don't spend money on grass cos we have our own. Anything that has come out of ours has thrived. Some trainers ride owners by charging extortionate amounts for grass when in fact they often are half starved when coming back in.

Worm and copper is the easy piece, it's everything else like back, joints, hooves etc and then the stuff that's in their head. Our Summer grass guy would often ring me saying he's not happy with X with one horse and Y with another. We get a specialist in to see them and find little problems which wouldn't always show up unless you were looking for it. But it might be the difference between three months off the following season. I feel I get value for money for the syndicate although I could get it a lot cheaper without any of the work done. But then I feel our horses are worth spending that extra few bob on and each to their own.

Sure one trainer last year advertised in the Post to train horses for free!! After being inundated with calls, he changed the ad to read "with winning form". The idea is that the prizemoney from decent performers would cover a bit of the training costs while getting his name in lights as having winners and attracting more owners. The current trainer advertising €500 claims he is a "top trainer", but when I heard who it was I couldn't place a winner beside his name!!

Other that only charles and paddy willmott will know when the handbrake is off..
Report GANT007 November 7, 2010 10:29 AM GMT
I'd be happy with a few crumbs from the table and a bit of prizemoney.
All stables have their own version of Paddy Willmott. No harm done.

McDonagh from Galway is the 500e trainer. Trained Senor Benny. Struggle to find any more winners by him though. He has some lad in training them though. Apparently he has a swimming pool. From what I heard it hasn't been cleaned out in years. You could find a shopping trolley in it I'd say. He has a few pubs rented as well. I'd say he's finding it tough. What price Gordon Elliott?
Report the jigger November 7, 2010 5:22 PM GMT
Gordon Elliott is around E1100 a month as well plus extras as far as i know.
Report Gallistic November 8, 2010 7:30 PM GMT
Elliott is 35e a day, reasonable price considering he is one of the better trainers.
