Probably should have dropped the 'BECAUSE ......' and just put a question mark after the rest of it.
Sorry to say but soccer is actually a more played sport in Ireland ![]() It would be great to see if Gant or daradasi can get the figures to prove me wrong :D |

The first person to mention an ESRI report will get a basketball, as opposed to a hurley, across the back of the head.
Basketball is more popular than hurling you know - just ask Tubbsy! |

Why the sorry Rocket?, I thought you were a soccer man first and foremost

No no Neill i prefer a to be called a good sportsman, actually maybe hurling first due to the club i am cennected with, second soccer third GAA football but it's a distant third. I scored on my debut playing hurling in Dublin for my club 1-7 a senior championship record for a man amking his debut playing the sport by all accounts lol.

Dublin panel beckons then, expect a call from Daly performing like that in a senior match, you'd think they'd start off a newcomer at junior or intermediate. Ask them to put you on the frees, thats how you get noticed, putting up big scores. McCrabbe needs someone to take the pressure off aswell, let him focus on his own game

No was going to declare for Dublin but money from the milage was not what i wanted so i told them to stuff it.

Some decent hurlers in the wee county....well done rocketfingers.

Rocketfingers how would we go about getting accurate figures as to who plays what........Most GAA lads are now playing soccer for the winter with their clubs and most true soccer men don't play GAA...Soccer would then probably have higher figures.
Could local soccer survive during the GAA season...well at a decent standard. Football probably played more than hurling nationwide. |

gantoo rocketfingers good to see you both been civilised to one another

It's no harm to be nice.....he might even convert to GAA one day.

gantoo how can you most decent soccer lads don't play gaelic football, sure it's a much easier game to play less time on the pitch more players etc etc. I used to play it too keep if there was no soccer or hurling. It's an easy sport to take up and as Pat Spillane said 6 months he could have a lad up to county standard. You can't say the same for soccer and hurling way too much skill and tactis involved in both. Pat Spillane said that not me. :)

Football and hurling are GAA...Why do you keep harping on about gaelic football.......If you played both you would not come out with a statement like that....a soccer pitch is tiny...sure all the dubs that moved down here get a game over 40 and a beer gut as the fella said stick him in centre half he can't move too far.
Give GAA a go sometime...you might like it...........but you cant beat a good drinking session after a early morning sunday soccer match...I will give you that one. Pat Spillane says a lot of things but I agree you probably could turn a soccer player into a decent standard gaelic footballer in 6 months......hurling is different.......soccer most people could give it a go as the standard in the country is fairly poor. Goodnight. |

Yes i know they are both run by the GAA, but Hurling is a far better sport, massive skill involved. I told you i love hurling the clash of the ash and all that. wish i played sport at your level but we were always straight home after matches getting the Lucozade striaght into us and away we would go then. My memory of gaelic football is dragging lads kicking and screaming to games but good fun after on the beer esp if the game was saturday evening, i scored 2-2 one day against the county champions, great day for gaelic that day.

1. Hurling is the best field sport in the WORLD . No other game that I know of has the level of skill and movement there is in a hurling match . Ice hockey has the speed , but you cant see the "ball" . Lacrosse is an excellent game , but not well known hereabouts .
2. I suspect that Gaelic football has 15 players on a team partly because of the affiliation with hurling , viz a common pitch . It might be a better game played with 13 or 11 on a slightly smaller pitch . 3. 90% of soccer matches are sleep inducing . It needs to be made easier to score . Who enjoys a scoreless draw ? The few times I played soccer taught me that if you wanted an easy , just play as a defender . Most skilful (soccer or gaelic ) players could do that with their eyes closed . And any game which allows people to commit fouls nearly every time they tackle the man in possession ( man , ball and all etc , the sliding tackle etc ) has to be suspect . As for the offside rule ..how artificial is it ( and annoying / argumentative / impossible to police properly without outside assistance -- replays etc ) . 4. I have no idea on relative numbers playing soccer and Gaelic football in Ireland , but I doubt if nearly every sizeable hamlet / village / small town in Ireland has a soccer team . They certainly dont have self owned pitches and dozens of players spread over a comprehensive age distribution spectrum . The GAA does . 5. If the GAA reintroduced the "ban " the number of soccer players would drop dramatically . It is relatively easy for Gaelic football players to play soccer effectively , a horse of a different colour to convert an average soccer player into a gaelic footballer ( at any level ) , despite what comments are attributed to Pat Spillane . 6. We GAA people are justly proud of the status of our national games , partly because over the years any available money has been ploughed back into the game at grass roots level . Most clubs I know of are solvent and are benefitting the local community big time , with little drain on national resources . And no big time waste of money or opportunity ! &. Ireland is extremely unlikely ever to be able to compete at the highest level at soccer ( again , and lots of that success down to an Englishman ) . The structure of soccer is completely pyramidic , from an early age kids want a trial with an English club , if you have not made it by 16 you can forget any aspirations . Imagine being washed up at 16 year old ! Most of the youngsters only really want to play for local clubs in the hope that they will be "spotted" and transferred . The English media have an unhealthy grip / relationship with soccer , it completely pervades their attitude to life ( which team do you support ? --well none actually --end of conversation ). Sky have taken over soccer in England , just hope todays events in Wales does not indicate they are going to do the same to golf . |
