The great man has announced that this Sunday's game will be his last All Ireland Final. Christ lads, the summer is going to be a duller place without him.

End of an era is a much abused phrase but in this case its true. It is very hard to imagine commentaries listened to in the car on a Sunday afternoon ever being the same again.

You would think with the timing RTE have apologised to an taoiseach by saying "dont worry we'll make a major announcement to bury the news of the past few days" Happy

There is a petition on anfearrua that rte switch to micheal for the last 5-10 mins ( some want the whole 70) of sundays game , would be a great end to his career , if anyone is a member maybe they would consider adding their name to it.

Never really understood the hype surroundinghim to be honest, but he is much better than Ger Canning even though it's is not comparing like with like, also I wouldn't fancy Marty comentating on a dog race. There is a dearth of good comentators in Ireland, though I'm coming around to Jerry Hannon now that people are slagging him offLaugh. Dunno, I just always find the GAA comentaters a bit hokey, especially Marty, seeing him do the intros for boxing was cringeworthy.

Iconic figure but every poor commentator. I remember tuning into a game and 10 minutes later i still didnt know the score.

Absolutely brilliant snippet on this at the end of the one o clock radio news today just before Liveline. Snippet from a Paul Durcan poem about him - sheer class.

It only came home yesterday how poor Ger Canning is.....

"I know this might sound silly, but why didn't Cork play like this in the first half...?"
