Building one in Donegal sounds like a great idea,steeped in horse racing tradition and literally on the doorstep of most of the top trainers.

The majority of racing at Dundalk is extremely boring.

Great facility and all but one is definetly enough in Ireland at the moment.

Before the economy took a nose dive there was talks of another all weather track being built in Tipperary.

I thought there was talks of one being built in Ballinrobe?

Dirt tracks are the worst thing that ever happened to racing.

Pity the first one wasn't put in Naas. A more central location and plenty of racegoers in the surrounding area. A lot closer to me too!

No need for a second aw track imo, Too much racing to concentrate on as it is.

Killarney got 2 sharp enough turns and has a good fair run in to the finish line,the ground was excellent at the latest meeting. Listowel not classified as a death trap but if u walked the course last yr the ground was a disgrace, couple horse broke down on the straight and had to be put down on the spot.

Kerry/Cork/Limerick/Tipp would be good locations. Tralee?

More gash racing less interest, less money, less levy, less prize money, dont want to end up like Engerland. One all weather track is enough IMO.

If it was important they'd put it on at a better time than Friday night - aimed purely at the degenerates to blow their wages at the end of the week. They even offer free entrance because the shops pick up all the bills And the place is still like a ghost town.

Not in love with Dundalk as a location tbh, the junction or Clonmel would have been better.

A AW track designed to cater for night racing along the lines of Wolverhampton (out on its own the biggest money spinner for arena leisure)in or on the outskirts of one of the major cities in the South would have a big chance of success IMVHO.

That said anything to do with racing could be poison but Horse racing has survived through the ages and why will it not survive in the future.
The dog track model is the one and only way for these tracks to survive and flourish

I live very near the old Limerick racecourse, IMO they should never have moved it,ripped the heart out of the place. They should have done the drainage or built an all weather, they might have made a load of money with all the houses built but they are now putting the new dog track in the area.

on a serious note. I can see why dundalk was chosen, in between Belfast and Dublin, good road and close enough airport. I think as a track its quite fair. Lingfield and wolver were not designed right and a horse travelling can get a bump and have no room for recovery

Theres a lot of snobbishness about AW. I say as long as there are good horses on it, then I'll watch, but what happens is 95% of it is cr ap and then you don't even notice the 5% good races as you think its all tat

I'd say most would think AW now which is way its hard for tracks to have all weather and turf(jump or flat) and not dilute the brand strength of their course

Well Neill I would not be up to speed on local issues but if the IHA and the greyhound board in conjunction with the government cannot put their noodles together and come up with the plan I suggest then they may as well pull the plug on this Island and let us sink into the Atlantic where we belong.
Here we have basically a City centre greenfield site to all intents and purposes that will now never require the amount of houses apartments that were planned for it. Without researching it is a certainty to be in NAMA by now.
If their is not enough brains to build a dog track on the inner of an AW track (nice and tight remember it will be for low grade horses so no need for a 4 furlong run in)
Set aside some for parking and let the rest be developed for housing and shopping centres.

It really is not that difficult. It will be situated in the heart of a great sporting city with access from Clare,Cork, Kerry and locally.

If that would not work then nothing will

agreed lustrumm, I don't really have a problem with the dog track but I'm just dissapointed they moved the racecourse tbh, I think it was a huge loss to the city, As a student I am aware of the big crowds they get when they have the student race night around April, I think around 5,000, well I'd say you could nearly double that if the course was left where it was. I know plenty of people who wouldn't go as they didn't want the hassle of getting out to Patrickswell, though in fairness some buss faccilities were provided, I just think the people who moved the course took a short term view, think of the events that could have been held after racing, an oppertiunity missed imo

The days of the cute kerry hoorism are at an end. 2 racetracks inthe kingdowm more than enough imo

That Tipp venue has run into serious planning trouble

Tipp would be good, O'brien likes the surface and we'd see some good horses there.

buncrana would be a good spot for an aw track..centrally located and lots of sand nearby?

tralee has a site big enough for AW,it being the old racecourse,they could even fit in the old viewing stand, you have goods roads to tralee Galway 2hrs 30m Cork 1hr 20m.

One AW is enough, trainers want to charge 150 a week to get old owners back into it.

Shotgun Willy that Tipp project may have run into planning problems but the money has been shot out of existence too!

Dundalk is enough now with all the motorways. Even Pat Healy in his Irish Field column says it's an easy drive back to Listowel with the great roads!

again everyone missing the point. Unless a track can finance itself it is a waste of time as the funding will eventually run out from the HRI and Government. It is casual racegoers having dinner, drinks betting on the tote and staying at the oncourse hotel that will have to finance this venture.
