Seriously this is really shocking and quite a disgusting story involving a under 16 GAA match and the ref receiving a broken jaw after it. Not be smart but the Louth fans got of scot free and it seems to have now encouraged more ref bashing GAA style. Sad

In the aftermath of the game, which Tipperary won 3-19 to 1-18, Kelly’s wife and four-year-old son were confronted by Waterford supporters outside the Jury’s Croke Park Hotel.

According to Kelly one of them verbally abused the little boy about his father’s performance. Yesterday the boy was reported to be still distressed by the experience and his father Eoin, who captained Waterford in 2005, said he was considering whether it was "worth it" to play inter-county hurling.

"He’s still very upset," said Kelly yesterday. "You’d have to ask yourself whether it’s worth carrying on playing for Waterford, if this is the kind of thing you have to deal with."

The revelation rounds off a weekend when the bad news for Waterford wasn’t confined to the field of play. Not only did they lose the All-Ireland semi-final to Tipperary, but the three-year-old daughter of long-time star Ken McGrath was bitten by a dog on Saturday in Waterford and was rushed to Cork University Hospital for emergency surgery.

Waterford manager Davy Fitzgerald said after the game that at the request of his family, McGrath had not been informed of the attack before the game.

"We would have had no problem if he wanted to get back for that," said Fitzgerald.

"That wasn’t a problem with us, that was their decision and that was the way they wanted it. I still am passionate about it (hurling) but your health and your family is the most important thing and a few things come into perspective when you look at today."

Ken McGrath came on late in the All-Ireland semi-final on Sunday and scored three points against Tipperary, but rushed to Cork afterwards to join his daughter, getting a garda escort through Dublin.

WABOCs - no place for that

Disgusting if the GAA don't act on this.

A lot of the general public / "supporters" have little idea of the commitment and effort that county players and officials put in for the love of the game . For little if any financial gain .  Personal ( broad family ) experience of this .

In the old days , when diets were less protein rich , families scrimped and saved so that the "county " or "club" player had a better diet than his siblings .  Our own board generally strove to ensure players were well fed while training , not all counties took this view .

Abuse on the terraces / stands always was there , but in a much milder ( and more humorous ) fashion than appears nowadays . Anyone guilty of abuse , pyhsical or verbal  should have the full weight of any punishment squarely applied . Have a few funny stories in that regard , showing potential of humour to defuse situations .

Not up to date on weekends events , my reading is confined to the Racing Post on a daily basis , but verbal abuse of a players wife and child is way beyond the pale . Off with their heads would have been the mantra in days of yore , cant argue with that .

The only antidote lies with the general public's attitude to events like this .  In that respect , Forums can help to formulate and direct policy .  Provided the numpties dont invade .

Do you have a link for that Gant?
Great post Kelly what sort of fans go up to kids and start giving him abuse because of the way his father played. Wow it's people like Gant who indirectly condones such action with lies about other sports. As for the ref jesus he is part of the reason the kids get to play sports without them a proper ref the game is not half what it is. The GAA needs to copy soccer and have one of those respect campaigns to stamp out this kinda thing!!!
