CROKE PARK would face an indefinite period of closure if there were fatalities or serious injuries arising from the contentious pitch invasions after All-Ireland finals.

It could also lead to an instruction to either seat Hill 16 or dramatically cut its 13,000 capacity. Fencing off the stands may also be necessary.

With work about to begin on the erection of barriers in front of Hill 16 in the latest attempt to keep the pitch clear after next month’s finals, Croke Park stadium director, Peter McKenna, has warned of grim consequences if nothing were done to alleviate the problem and a major tragedy occurred.

“Quite simply, the stadium could be shut down for whatever length it took for outside agencies to conduct a full and thorough inquiry. We would have no say whatsoever in the matter,” he said.

GAA director general, Paraic Duffy, was equally blunt, stating that the situation was so serious that they would do whatever it took to ensure the end of pitch invasions.

“The expert advice, plus what we have seen for ourselves, suggests that there is a high risk of death or serious injury if the scenes which applied in recent years are allowed to continue. We certainly don’t want that to happen and then face the very fair question: ‘You knew this was dangerous, so what did you do about it?” Duffy said.

Special barriers, designed by the GAA’s architects, engineers and safety consultants, are currently being manufactured and will be in place in two weeks’ time. The final bill is expected to be in the region of €100,000.

The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) are fully behind the latest initiative, but there’s considerable opposition to the move across various sectors of the GAA, including some county officers.

“We have been shocked by the level of hostility to something that’s being done purely in the interests of public safety. It has come from certain commentators, members of the public and, indeed, some of our own officers. We’re being accused of abandoning tradition, but, if a tradition is dangerous to the public, then it should be abandoned. How could anybody believe that we have any other motivation except safety,” said Duffy.

McKenna said that while everyone is entitled to their views, it is unhelpful that people are “pontificating on something without recognising the consequences of what they were encouraging”.

Attempts to persuade the public to remain off the pitch failed over the last few years, leading to a change of policy this year. Duffy said that the attack on referee Martin Sludden after this year’s Leinster final wasn’t a key factor in the decision to erect barriers.

“It's a much wider issue than that. We’re installing them in front of Hill 16 only because that’s where the main pressure comes from. We’re hoping that will solve the problem, but if it doesn’t we will have to revisit it. What’s beyond doubt is that continuing to allow the pitch to be invaded by anything up to 25,000 people just cannot be allowed. We’re charged with responsibility for keeping people safe and have to deliver on that,” he said.

Government intervention by way of legislation – which is in use in many other countries – has been ruled out. The GAA wrote to the Sports Minister, Mary Hanafin, asking that the Government consider introducing a law making it illegal to trespass on sports grounds but she rejected the proposal, stating that it was the responsibility of the various organisations to look after their own security

Lets hope this shames the GAA in finishing the stadium for once and for all and making the updates the stadium needs to bring it up to modern day. The GAA needs to think about health and safety first and foremost rather than the 2 big pay days they get a year. Martin Breheny as a member of the GAA i salute sir for saying what me and some our members have been saying recenlty, let's take a leaf out of the FAI/IRFU book and step into the 21st century.

Can't really believe my name gets dragged up I only thought the Aviva was overhyped and Im very a soccer man first and a GAA man second but hey my heads in the sand :)

TBH the indo have been running a lot of GAA critical articles since the admittedly disgraceful Louth fans attack on the referee.

As explained before Croke Park is a 21st century stadium located in an inconvinient part of town in terms of congestion but is still this countrys finest stadium by a country mile.

Its one of the great stadiums of the world and the Hill adds to it in terms of both terracing and the history surrounding the original hill.

Lads i love Croker but it's heatlh and safety who don't they will close the old girl if the GAA don't update the ground and finish what they started. When was the last stadium, the is seen as one of the best in the world, not to be all seated? or when was the last iconic stadia to be uodated/rebuilt or newly built and not being all seated? The GAA have dropped the ball big time and no matter our stadia is no longer up to scratch.

GAA Shame on you.

Thats that safe standing, They have them in Germany hardly a terrace area that the Hill is to be fair. Granted what would be cool if they completed Croker and made the Hill area a safe standing zone i'm sure health and safety would have no issues with a safe standing area, might keep the the finals in Croker then. Don't blame the messanger irishro.Sad

Rocket you seemed to have missed the point of that article, either deliberately or just because you're plain thick. There is no problem with Hill 16 being a standing area, the health and safety issue is regarding pitch invasions which obviously initiate at the Hill 16 end due to it being a standing area with easy acess to the pitch.
John Delaney is on the record as saying that Platini lamented to him on their visit to the All Ireland Hurling Final that soccer stadiums were not allowed have an area like this to add to athmosphere and character to some of their featureless grounds.

Dazza are you saying great stadiums like the Stadio Olympico, Wembley, Stade de France, Aviva stadia, Allianz Arena, Emirates, The millenium Stadium are featureless because they are finished without a dangerous open terrace? Laugh Dazza all we are saying is we want to be safe when we enter Croker can you say hand and heart that is the case my friend?Sad

Lads. Clearly he knows the issue solely revolves around pitch invasions and segregation
and all seaters are only necessary when your supporters consist solely of vermin who
pay to see house breakers and drug dealers.

Don't feed the guy, anytime he's made a fool of, which is everytime, he simply makes
increasingly bizarre statements as he gets more and more frustrated. Just leave him
be let him type away by himself.

I will say though, the Aviva, is said by loads of people who were there to be extremely
dangerous in and around the ground. Something which never happens in Europe's most
historic and modern sporting cathedral, Croke Park.
