Can anybody tell me how much it would cost to get involved in the game with a dog. I am totally green and i know if i contacted a trainer i would probably get sold a jack russell. Any advice how to get involved and not be taken for a ride? Also whats the fees like?
firstly go to the track on a regular basis , get to know the trainers , be carefull lots of guys willing to tell you what you want to hear . if you find after awhile your still interested , i recommened you go juring the winter months so you get a real feel for it . approach one of said trainers and ask if they have a dog that suits your pocket .they charged around 60/75 a week the last time i had a dog with one thats about 3yrs ago .hope that helps.

60/75 is still around the norm..........I'd go the pup route ....buy one under 6 months old and send it to a good rearer eg. Martin Tucker loads of others.......at 15 months it will be lightly schooled and ready to go into training costs rearing 25 a week / schooling 45/50 pw...........serious value out there at the moment if someone wants to get into the game.......dropped 2 bitches to be mated to crash and hometown boy the other day and they were flat out. Some good trainers out there......it depends on you, if you want to visit regularly choose one near you. Only speaking from experience avoid the bar rogue trainers and those who are heavy punters. Be careful buying a racedog for handy money. Pups for sale in sporting press, greyhound data and from breeders direct. only my opinion

pup route to expensive imo .as a breeder i found it harder and harder to make ends meet and finally gave up . to bring up a pup and get it to the track is imo a very risky proposition and very very expensive , you could have spent thousends on a pup get it to the schooling track only to find it wont even chase . sapling might be the answer .

I agree with you there........had a few that didn't follow.........we handslip ours at 13 months so know early enough if they at least chase...........even the sapling route is risky, I was at a well known schooling track recently and saw these 2 little black dogs chasing like mad on the track.......I got chatting to the 2 men in the car park who had the dogs... they were 2 elderly men who drove down from Dublin and they told me the 2 blacks were only gone 10 months......the 2 boys had a flask so over a cup of tea they told me they do this all the time...slip them at 10 months and if they chase put them away for 3 months.

if its who i think it is , then thats the proof of the pudding . just for me pups of that age have very brittle bones and most of these schooling tracks are shall we say , are not well kept .

If you're a newbie, I'd definitely suggest buying a graded dog whose had a few runs. As already stated it's a huge help if you know a few ppl in the game to ensure you don't get completely shafted. You won't pay much for a average grader, and you'll learn a lot about the sport from owning it and watching it run.
I did the same when I got into dogs, bought a b!tch for €500, she won 6 for us (€200 per month for training) and it was a smashing introduction.

Workrider and rocketfingers are the same person, anyone with half a brain could see that. I think that anyone misrepresenting themselves under a different username just shouldn't be entertained. "Rocketfingers" hadn't even the good manners to thank himself for his reply to his initial question.

have owned greyhounds for a number of years. Won a final in HX & also open class stake in Longford with a handiful of dogs .
always bought pups & got them reared. never bought a sapling as have always had the impression that most of them had a good few hand-slips
I would recommend getting a decent trainer, depends what part of the country your in. If you want more info let me know.

Ffs jungleboogie, workfingers or rocketrider or whatever he is called,is hardly in the market for a greyhound. Its a pisss take and as per usual a pretty ordinary effort(one wouldnt expect anything else from somebody with such a low iq). What i like about rocketrider is the pathetic attempts to garner sympathy by passing on personal information to people that he doesnt even know from adam, and secondly the attempts at turning a thread into a so called fishing thread, after 20 other posters have accused him of being an illiterate imbecile.

yeah heard he was good , its so important to get the right stuff into them at an early age .i remember having to send my bitch to a guy in the midlands the guy who was to whelp her was away . the guy in the midlands just gave them bread and milk plus he had hundreds of pups all over the place , i got them out as quick as nature would allow but the feeding wasen't in them from the start. even though they won races they were never going to be what i'd hoped for .

Most places feed them fairly well nowadays and as numbers decline the better rearers will survive. There are still a few rogues out there but these lads don't last long. Sometimes it works out cheaper to feed them well.............We use beef, chicken and Gain puppy and sapling as our main diet.....and veg stew.
I knew a lad doing the bread and milk lark before, it cost him a fortune buying sliced pans and 2 litre drums of milk, the lad also used to buy a little bit of mince in the local butchers at 1.80 lb.
Beef, chicken, turkey in around 60c to 75c a pound good quality. Gain puppy and sapling 15kg bag €22...veg, cheese in lidl or aldi.

I would advise you to check out your track first - i owned 2 A grade dogs a couple of years back in a country track - ALWAYS FIT AND HEALTHY - RARELY GOT RUNS. One of the dogs was a sprinter - what a farce - if there is one race a meeting for sprinters you're doing well.
In my opinion there are way too many dogs and not enough races. Cost me every week to keep both dogs in training and maybe they got a run once a month - Complete joke
Wrote letter to IGB complaining - never got a reply. They should not be encouraging syndicates if they can't guarantee a regular race for a fit dog. They need to either increase race fields from 6 runners to 8 runnners, or extra 2 races every meeting.

Are you sure you had your A grade dogs in Ireland......A what?. Tracks do their best here as racing is very competitive. If you want to race twice a week you should run your dogs at the bags meetings in the uk.

how many real good dogs has tucker reared ? i know he reared a good one henessy trained began with an N, cant remember its name, but he must rear a load of dogs, with the size of the place in his advert not having a go just ineterested

Thats a question only the rearer can answer.........I'm not one one for nosing about other peoples dogs......All I know is that they come back in serious condition and lightly schooled...........the rest is up to the trainer/owner..........it's like the old saying if a litter turns out bad blame the rearer or the stud dog it's never your bi*ch............he turns out a steady few winners here and across the water. I have always found him to be a straight talking man.

GANT007 i never said anything about wanting them to race twice a week, but if you have dog that wins an OPEN class race and has to wait 6 weeks to race again there is something wrong. I know this is a FACT because my dog experienced it. And I reinforce it again, depends on your track. My dog was 5 mins from the local track and ran more often 100 miles away because that was the only place it could get a run.
Add in training fees, travel costs etc and even if it wins you still dont break even.

no way richters , can you just imagine setting one up for a gamble , he'd be on here telling everyone his dogs gonna win , then wonder why the price had gone....
