Race 1) Obligada (5/2f). A lot of hard luck stories here esp among the placed horses. Well backed from 5/1 into 5/2f the first of a double for the Lady O'Reilly/K Prendergast/ C hayes team. Can go on from this and maybe win a nursey.
Race 2) Snow Mountain(3/1). A winner for the powerful Ballydoyle team. This time Colm O'Donoughue was in the saddle. He took the race by the scruff of the neck and made all controlling the pace. He picked up a 3 day ban at the start. The runner up Sydney Harbour the odds on jolly got into gear late and can win next time out over a mile. The winner was backed in from 7/1 to 3/1 and some bookies were adding one and one and getting three IMO.
Race 3) Brazilan Beauty (4/1). The second leg of the double for the winners of the first race. The step back to 7 furlongs was the key and with the aid of blinkers for the first time Chris hayes made all to win fair and square. The money horse Palm Ridge ( 2/1 to 11/10) ran a sound race on his seasonal debut as did Purple Land returning from Group 3 company. Both of these shouldn't be long in picking up a Maiden. Bradilian Beauty looks tailormade for a big mile handicap at Leopardstown.
Race 4) Cinn Oir (9/1) Astute judge EMI tipped up this in his RP column. An absolutely peach of a ride from star jockey Fran Berry came from the rear of the pack to beat the flattering One Of Three. its nice Mr geoghegan have another winner. Monteragonni was his previous star performer.
Race 5) Coolagad Wonder (12/1) Paric Beggy is firing in the winners this season and won this upside down handicap fair and square. It was a seriously dross race.
Race 6) Ceannline (7/2jf) Another peach of a ride here this time from the ever consistent Kevin Manning. He controlled the race from the front. The 3rd horse Sugar Baby Love came from the rear as usual and definitely there is a race to be won shortly, off around this mark.
Race 7) Spinning Wings (8/1) Ben Curtis is without doubt the best 5lb apprentice around. Another front running performance here. I can see this one running a big race in the big Amateur race at galway on the opening day.
CORK SUNDAY
Race 1) Khelino (10/1) The shrewdies were on this one at 40/1. Well done to Satellite Flight who took the 25/1 in our competition. Ben Curtis again. Joe Eile the jolly had every chance and it won't be long before he picks up a maiden.
Race 2) Clondinnery (7/4f). Home bred this speedily bred Chosir colt followed up his maiden win at the Curragh where he beat the highly thought of Radharcnafarraige. Ger Lyons once again showing why he is a master trainer with 2 yr olds having won this race last year. He is going to find it tough with a Listed penalty in the future.
Race 3) Iron Major (7/2f). A highly deserving turn here for the ever consistent Iron Major where the gaps came at the right time. The first leg of a double for Champion jockey Johnny Murtagh.
Race 4) Queen Of Troy (10/1) Joseph O'Brien got real lucky here as stable companion Full Of Hope was all dressed up with nowhere to go and had to settle for 3rd. Drifting fav Zayaan (7/4 to 9/4) never got into it.
Race 5) Grace O'Malley (7/2). The thrill of flat racing was on display here as 3 fillies gave there all in this Group 3 race. They flashed past the post in unison with the advantage going one way and then the other. All 3 at stages looked like they would win. The in foal winner made all for Pat Smullen who rides like he has a clock in his head. Witness his win on Famous Name a month ago at Leopardstown. The placed horses will surely pick up a prize later in the season. The winner will find it tough with a Group 3 penalty.
Race 6) Full Title (7/2f)Reggie Roberts is a master at the dogs. He can certainly train the horses too. This filly had dropped to a low rating and Reggie has made a mockery of it. One to note. Maggie The Cat a morning gamble lost her chance at the gate, but she ate up the ground in the last furlong and if the handicapper leaves her on on the same mark she can win shortly.
Race 7) Super Say (2/5f) This jolly brought up Johnny Murtagh's jolly. Those who took opening shows of 4/5 went home happy. Johnny made all here and just had to keep him up to his task. Willie Supple and Bold Identity won't be long in picking up a maiden judged on this debut. Prayer Boat looks like one to swerve with a most awkward head carriage.
SUMMARY
Flat racing gets a bad name but when it is run on good fast ground it is a marvellous sight as the horses go round the tracks at speed. Jockey's have to be alert at all times as not getting out in time can be the winning and losing of a race. Last year the flat was run on mostly soft ground.
Roll on Derby Week-end at the Curragh under blue skies and not too hot temperatures.
lady songbird surely the unlucky one in ceannlines race soapp , had a huge bet each way on this one in galway last year , ran a great race, surely compensation awaits in the west this year , i think she is being laid out for it.
