My own view for what it is worth is that they wanted to give the winner a turn who got a terrible ride from their now 4th string jockey Heffernan at Listowel last Sunday. However they probably told Johnny to get handy swinging in and if the front runner conked (there were some other nice types in the race) not to let the winning bracket behind. As it turned out the winner was going well so Murtagh left him win as he may not get another turn and his horse will.
I'd say that is as good a summary as any.

Lustrumms synopsis is spot-on. It's very important to get a maiden win into these horses either for breeding or to sell on. The winner may never again win a race while Murtaghs should pick up a maiden handy. It's not much solace to those who punted Murtagh but it should come as no suprise to people who follow the game and should at least be at the back of your mind when getting involved in flat maidens where connections have numerous representitives.
