David Casey: 14-day suspension

PICTURE: Caroline Norris
JOCKEY David Casey was suspended for 14 days on Monday evening after Killarney stewards decided that his mount, Mulgrave Street, astaying-on sixth in division two of the Laurels (C&G) Maiden Hurdle, had not been allowed to run on his merits.

The horse, a six-year-old owned by JP McManus, was suspended for 42 days and his trainer Tony Mullins fined €2,000.

Casey jumped off in rear aboard and his mount was never a factor in the contest, in the end keeping on to finish a never-dangerous sixth to Bruach Na Mara.

In the subsequent inquiry,  Casey reported that he was instructed to get his mount relaxed and jumping early and to try to get him to finish well, as he had shown very little in his previous two runs on testing ground.

Therider said that his mount ran in snatches throughout the race, made a few mistakes and gurgled in the final circuit of the race. He also stated that it was his belief that this animal may need three miles in the future.

Mullins stated that this horse has had many problems in the past and had not shown much in his first two runs. He also felt that today may have been his last chance to show some promise.  He was surprised by the performance and  was very happy with Casey's riding.

Despite Casey's contention that the horse gurgled, he was found to be normal on veterinary examination after the race. The stewards were of the opinion that the horse had not been allowed to runon its merits in contravention of Rule 212(a).

we've all seen worse get away with less, this horse was 33-1 and had no form, what are the stewards at?

So that I understand.... if you are a longshot you don't have to try?

In fairness to Casey, you could have 75% of maiden hurdlers before the stewards for similar allegations.
If a horse had to finish in the 1st 6 places to attain a handicap mark maiden hurdles might be a little more competitive and a lot of the rubbish wouldn't be running

i may have worded that incorrectly, we have seen worse get punished less was my first point i didn't mean to imply that Casey intentionally held up the horse.

Casey is generally an honest jock and how the stewards made out this horse could have done better when, form, ring price and jockeys opinion after getting off the thing suggested that the horse wasn't much better, is the baffling part.

Previous form and a horses sp are not relevant variables when adjudicating whether said horse ran on its merits. You only need to look at the runs of Laetitia and Crossdresser to realise that.

Interesting to review these sort of situations 2 or 3 years down the line when the horses concerned have more or less finished their careers . Unless I see the race myself , find it hard to comment ( I did not see the race ) , but overall it seems unlikely that anyone was affected financially by this run ( bookie or punter ) .

I am more worried by horses whose form entitles them to be a 5/1 shot , open at that on here and starts at between 12 and 16 on here ---and seldom if ever win .  Those are the ones I would query .

For years I have been advocating that any horse which has been pulled up or subject of an inquiry should run next time out in its race purely as a "re-introductory" competitor , with no access to prize money or betting , ie purely as an addendum runner , carrying specific non involved colours . Limits any skulduggery , while highlighting Steward's discomfort with the previous situation . Maybe its too logical an approach .

Didnt see the race but notwithstanding that , there is some charming naivety being displayed by certain posters which you dont expect on this forum principally the notion that there is no damage done by a non-trier if he has no form and is a big starting price. The horse was having his third start in maiden hurdles and would ordinarily be eligible for a handicap mark after this run . There may be no damage done to bookie and punter on the day but what about the unfairness to connections of those horses who would meet that horse on his next start in handicap company or indeed punters betting on that contest unaware that a horse had obtained a handicap mark after being 'stopped' on his previous start ? The horse certainly looked modest on his first two starts but Killarney marked the first time he encountered good going . As I say I didnt see the race but it must have looked terrible on film if resort was had to that hoary old chestnut of an excuse - the horse gurgled .

MAYBE CASEY SHOULD BE ASKED TO EXPLAIN HIS RIDING OF THE BEATEN KIELY ODDS ON SHOT WHO DRIFTED DRAMATICALLY ALL DAY.
OR WAS HE RIDING TO ORDERS. for a small stable there was unnatural support for alpine glade , all the odds compilers were happy to quote 7/2 or 4/1 until after the 1st race and then she shortened
