Justin McCarthy will stay as Limerick Senior hurling manager after he tonight got the overwhelming support of delegates to a specially convened meeting of the Limerick County Board at Claughaun.
The meeting was open to the media, and was not held in-camera as was speculated in this mornings newspapers.
133 delegates voted out of a possible 138, on the motion which stated.

THOSE PLAYERS WOULD WANT TO COP THEMSELVES ON, ALL THE GREAT MEN THAT HURLED FOR LIMERICK AND THESE BLOKES WHO GOT THE BIGGEST HAMMERING LIMERICK EVER GOT IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP SULKING BECAUSE SOME OF THEM WERE DITCHED AFTER THAT DEBACLE,WOULD THEY NOT JUST PULL TOGETHER AND GET ON WITH IT

I agree totally, they should want to play for their county whoever is in charge. If they like taking humpings from Tipp like we have been feck them and leave those other young lads who want to play have the opportunity to say at least they hurled for their county. Great win again for Ard Scoil Ris the other day on a brighter note.

Don't think it's as simple as saying just get on with it. I know someone who played intercounty hurling under the current Limerick incumbent & when he was appointed he said 'Well that's team morale & player management f#cked for you lot anyway'.
Damien Reale said that the players had a meeting before the Wexford game last year as they realised their performances against Waterford were not good enough. They put in what was arguably their best performance of the campaign & won in the South East. Reale added that Justin banned all team meetings after the match as 'there was too much talking going on' & the current management team has not denied this assertion.
I watched the TV3 & RTE previews of the debacle that was the Tipp-Limk encounter last year. In that we had a bunch of ex-Cork,ex-Waterford & current Limk officials eulogising about how Justin spent an hour before every training session looking at hurleys. I knew Limk was f#cked at that point. I couldn't imagine Paul Nicholls wasting an hour every morning looking at Ruby's whip, saddle & boots before letting him ride work. It is one of the most daft things in sport I have every heard & fully expect Justin to be a Green candidate in the next general election.

to be fair to McCarthy, history will show he has improved the team.
They were beat 24 points by Tipp last summer, but only by 22 at the weekend.
The gap is closing lads.

Since 2001 Limerick has played Tipperary 9 times in the SHC. The results were as follows: 2001 Tipp win by 2pts. 2004 Tipp win by 1pt. 2005 Draw - Tipp win replay by 1pt. 2006 Tipp win by 4pts. 2007 Draw - Draw - Limk win 2nd replay by 3pts. 2009 Tipp win by 24pts. (I think both the replay wins were AET - someone with greater hurling knowledge can confirm/deny that assertion) There was no improvement between 2007 & 2009. There have been many ordinary Limerick teams in recent years, but one thing we knew for certain was that they would always give it a go against Tipp & that Limk wouldn't be ashamed when the final whistle was blown. There wasn't a significant change in playing personnel from the 3 game saga in 2007. However, there was a major change in the Limerick management team.

I haven't followed this closely as I am sick and tired of these disputes but it's impossible to ignore anymore.
Have the players declared any substantial grievance apart from not being allowed to hold internal meetings (and being dropped)?
Something seems very wrong down there and it is too easy to just suggest management as the problem. Pad Joe tried to change things there also and was met with brick wall after brick wall.

KK05/Downallstar, Firstly, the players haven't broken any laws. Apart from the players not being allowed hold meetings in case they were to prove successful the main bone of contention is as follows. At the end of the hurling season, McCarthy dropped circa 13 players from the senior hurling panel. To paraphrase he said at the time of this announcement that these players were dropped as the attitude/application to training during the season was poor & this was the reason Limk had performed so poorly against Tipp.
The then Capt Damien Reale commented as follows (again this was not disputed by MacCarthy) to paraphrase: During the season Justin gave no indication that the attitude/work rate in training was an issue. In fact Justin said we were the best bunch of trainers he ever had & that we were a pleasure to train in that we always did what we were told with great enthusiasm.
The retained players noticed an inconsistency in MacCarthy's communications. This seems to indicate that Justin did not identify a problem with the training sessions prior to the Tipp debacle & only used it as an excuse to lay the entire blame for that disaster @ the foot of the players.

Incorrect. McCarthy said that "It didn't have a huge effect, but going forward I will not tolerate that - we have to have a better code of discipline". It was never used as an excuse.
For sure he could have communicated better with all the players but that's it. Last week a couple of the players stated that if Justin called them and cleared the air that things could move forward but it seems that even now that McCarthy has contacted them all to clear the air they are still not satisfied.

McCarthy is an awful man manger and a pure egotist. What matters most to Justin is Justin, not the players, teams or counties that he manages. Pity to see Limerick clubs and county board unable to see through this charlatan.

The eleven players who have withdrawn in recent months from the Limerick Hurling panel were all invited back but were asked for a decision within 24 hours on whether they would play this year.
McCarthy telephoned all of the exiled hurlers on Friday evening in the hope of getting them back to play this years championship.
But not one made contact by the Saturday evening deadline and therefore Limerick will complete the 2010 league and championship with the current panel.
McCarthy made contact with the players who were dropped last October but did not ask any of them to rejoin the panel.
