Limerick publicans have been granted a special exemption to open for business on Good Friday.

They had sought the exemption to accommodate over 26,000 people who will attend the Munster and Leinster rugby match at T**nd Park.

Judge Tom O'Donnell noted in his judgment today that the publicans only made the application as a last resort.

AdvertisementHe also noted that T**nd Park had a special stadium licence and they would be allowed to serve drinks from when they open their doors until after the match.

Judge O'Donnell said it seemed absurd to him that pubs in the locality could not open for business as well.

He said he was also making the ruling for health and safety reasons when 26,000 people would be spilling out of T**nd Park immediately after the match.

He said the pubs could stay open from 6pm until 11.30pm that night.

The State had opposed the application by the publicans.

Good call by the Judge. Typically opposed by the State. Not my State.

Jaysus I'm not one bit religious but can we not respect one tradition instead of bowing to pressure from pubs, no doubt we'll have racing on good friday soon too. One day without drink my god how will people survive.
Report shaggykev March 25, 2010 11:24 AM GMT
if it was limerick fc v bohs i doubt the pubs would be open
Report Frank The Tank March 25, 2010 11:26 AM GMT
Bohs and Limerick would do well to get a crowd of 260 so not a case of comparing like with like.
Report kavvie March 25, 2010 11:35 AM GMT
260 people and 300 garda to escort the bohs fans to the train after the match..

Pubs should be able to open if and when the wish similiar to the local Spar shop . This inteference by the State is a throwback to the days when the Catholic Church were in effective control.

what do you expect from the rugby crowd...their main club competition is the Lager Cup and the leagues called the cider league?
Report soapp March 25, 2010 5:29 PM GMT
Great stuff!! I was listening to a publican from Adare on the radio. He said he will open too, serving food and non alcoholic drinks.
he said he expects to do real well. The match is on Setanta Sports and very few subscribe to it.

Lets hope the Dublin publicans do something similar. Good Friday is always the most boring day of the year.

A shame that no player-not a single one-has the gumption to withdraw his services from this wretched game.
Report macrocky March 25, 2010 6:12 PM GMT
From where i live there is rarely trouble from pubs these days, maybe less people getting locked.
The trouble in localities in ireland is from ASBO'S they are drinking in sheds and parks while taking drugs also, probably teens or young adults, they are making gardai jobs hard.
Isnt this a harmless way of generating the economy, are we so afraid of breaking the tradition of good friday, the clergy dont seem to give a toss about the ten commandments anyway
Report applehunter March 25, 2010 6:47 PM GMT
Why break the tradition.

The pubs closing is a mark of respect for what Good Friday commemorates.

Nothing has changed on that count.

the rugger b uggers are in for a rude awakening ....every scobie and abso in neighbouring counties will head for limerick ....plus timbermans mates ..publicans could be busy with the equality authorithy if they get picky ..pubs closing on good friday dont bother me ,indeed theres a rich tradition of good friday card games and other activities
limerick could be carnage
Report kincsem March 26, 2010 4:07 PM GMT
Its a recipe for trouble, probably a bit of damage but publicans won't pay.
Report RamonSanchezPizjuan March 26, 2010 5:11 PM GMT
Things will be grand, you won't find too much trouble in the city most nights, suburbs are the dodgepot zones. You still won't see a copper on the beat though, it is funny how i never see them in the city on a Friday or Saturday night.
Report Threeforone March 26, 2010 9:57 PM GMT
Once again we show our unhealthy relationship with drink.
I know it can be a boring game and maybe a few drinks are needed.
Why cant we do anything without alcohol been the at the centre of it.
Report BJG March 26, 2010 10:08 PM GMT
Correct Ramon

Unless they are comin outa abrakebabra imo ;)
