I hope nobody buys his book.... People need to appreciate that this man in 2004 2005 and 2006 ignored a lot of top advice. This advice came from the central bank ! and from top economists. Because he ignored this advice everybody is effected in this country. We have him and his team of wasters to thank for ruining our lives and our future.

The central bank warned Ahern over his handling of the economy in 2005!!! Ahern declined it and laughed it off. It was all over the news fgs.

yes Central bank have lots of good advice.

the Central Bank, which has responsibility for monetary policy functions, financial stability, economic analysis, currency and payment systems, investment of foreign and domestic assets and the provision of central services; and

So the Central Bank is far from some advisory group. They have a core position in the financial administration of this country. Trying to absolve them of any responsability for the mess the country finds itself in is naive.

Tips ?

Here's a tip from The Man Himself in the Irish Times of 19th Sept 08 :

"Bank of Ireland shares are € 3.80 today. Now if I meet you here next year, or the year after, do you seriously think Bank of Ireland shares will be € 3.80? I'd go out and buy Bank of Ireland shares . . . that's what I'd do."

As of last Friday, BoI shares closed at E 1.26 . They'll be even lower tomorrow.
Report Ernie__Bert February 21, 2010 1:43 PM GMT
The book is on ebay for 1 cent.
Report Biodiesel February 22, 2010 1:28 AM GMT
"Ahern was educated at St. Patrick's National School in Drumcondra and at St. Aidan's Christian Brothers in Whitehall.[5] He received his third level education at the College of Commerce, Rathmines, part of the Dublin Institute of Technology. Ahern has claimed or it has been claimed by others in circulated biographies that he was educated at University College Dublin and the London School of Economics but neither university has any records that show Ahern was ever one of their students"

Usually I'd agree, and i didn;t get involved, but the government of the day was encouraging people to join in the fun. begrudgers were told to commit suicide by the prime minister. Those highlighting the social cost of inflated property prices were told to get involved or move abroad, not to be moaning all the time. developers continued to receive tax breaks on development projects 3 years after an independent economic advisory group recommended it be withdrawn immediately. Indeed this group found that it was concerned that the beneficiaries of this tax break were a very small narrow interest group with policital connection. As noted above the central bank was also ignored.

Everyone was effectively told to shut up.

I think you'll find pots that you are about to become part owner of overpriced houses, worthless pads in tallaghtcante, carlow, leitrim, cavan etc. zombie hotels, acres of empty apartment blocks, worthless golf course and spa developments, and plenty of bogholes spread across this glorious land.....maybe you should send Mr. Ahern a thank you letter!!
Report reb February 22, 2010 5:11 PM GMT
Greelo, think you mean to refer to the original post by Invisible Knave as that's what Pots was quoting.

I was waiting for someone to point out how we've all become unwilling, but not beneficial "owners" of so many wasteful constructions dotted all over the country . As you say we, and future generations, can thank Ahern and the Soldiers of Destiny for that.

I've read his book.I didn't buy it, I borrowed it from the library.

A couple of points about it:

It is written for the foreign market & as a support piece for a presidential election campaign.
He spends a huge proportion of the book going into tedious detail of the resolution of the North's troubles & frankly it is boring.
He doesn't explain why he entered politics.
He says that he was completely against the last tax amnesty that he brought in. He was Minister for Finance & says it was ironic that he had to sell it to the public/media when he was the only one in the cabinet that was against it.... but didn't think it was a resigning matter.
He also said that you could see on his face when interviewed by RTE that he was livid about being put in that position.
(Unfortunately for Bertie, RTE constantly show this clip on 'Reeling in the years' & he is smirking & laughing his head off.
He remembers in great detail all the different masses he attended at all the momentous occasions in his life but thinks it's unreasonable of the opposition to refuse to accept his assertion that he just does not remember where all the money came from/went.
The entire financial questions, including dig-outs, loans, the tribunal & Gilmartin allegations are dealt with in approx 7 pages.
