Sad to see him leave on a losing note, but he made the right decision and not too many boxers know when to retire.

I imagine there'll be a comeback.

He'll be top of the list for every reality TV programme at RTE now. Hope not though, because I like him, but RTE could well change that for me.

Trained to be a firefighter a few years back-always said he'd do that when he was done. A good guy-hope he does well whatever he decides to do.

Will he be protesting about the pay cuts? likeable enough chap although he seemed to attract every scobe in Dublin to his fights. Average fighter to boot.

Excellent news.

He is not capable of reaching the summit again in my opinion. To try and get there again would mean that he would eventually run into another opponent that could dish out a beating like the last one he received. Eventually one of these wars would have a lasting effect on a boxer and there is a lot more for him to lose than gain by trying to win a belt again.

He comes across as a very decent bloke, has won a world title and has retired in good health.

Best of luck to him.

i would say the retirement of one of irelands very few bona fide world champions is a fairly significant news story in irish sport

If every sport had 5 or 6 'world champions' in multiple divisions we would have plenty of world champions. Dunne is a good lad but anyone who thinks he is a world class boxer is deluded. At 30 he is a bit young to be walking away but it would be a long road back for him. He gained a pretty soft world title against Cordoba who won his title in Panama. Of his 30 odd fights only 3 or 4 his opponents were of any significance. He was well exposed against Martinez who has been found out in turn and the Thai lad - I was there that night and it was not a nice experience to see him taken apart. I hope he hung on to the few quid he made and best of luck to him but it hardly qualifies as one of the great sporting stories or shocks of the year.

Bit harsh but true.

It's excessively harsh Giant, to the point of being contrary for the sake of it.

The tie-in to Celtic Tiger boom is a mortifying and irrelevant reference from Conlon while upperhandedly criticizes journalists elsewhere in the column.

Dunne's win over Cordoba and his brief ownership of a European belt indicates that he was a world class contender - not a world class champion, not a legend of the sport, but genuinely one of Ireland's few sportsmen who could go out and mix it at the top level.

Yeah RTE and the Irish media over-stated his ability constantly, but they would, wouldn't they?

"Thousands of 'fight fans' sprung up overnight to acclaim a boxer whose charisma outside the ring exceeded his class inside it." A shameful quote from Conlon. Dunne actually oozed class, and was a very gifted, silky boxer. There's little 'class' in having a strong chin, but it was Dunne's key weakness.

A poor effort from Conlon. When's he going to announce his retirement?

That BraveInca feller is right, for jesus sake who cares if Dunne retired or not,he wouldnt beat snow off a rope.I wouldnt fancy his chances outside a nightclub of a Saturday night. He aint as big as a shirt button,id beat the balls out of him myself, there aint much good being able to box if you are only 6 stone.
As for being a fireman, the poor feller wouldnt be able to lift a hose, maybe they could sit him up on the dash in the front of the fire engine when they are on the way to an incident.

Your inability to even grasp something as simple as weight divisions does not surprise me.
By:

When: 22 Feb 10 11:21
Hey KKO5 i aint a boxing fan.Its not a nice sport now is it.Who wants to see 2 people beat the shiite out of each other. Its predominantly low lifes who do it,its managed by even bigger low lifes, and finally the supporters are even worse than your average Shamrock Rovers supporter and that really is poor.
55 weight divisions with 20 belts for each division makes a world title about as valuable as a cream egg. They should simplify the whole sport with just one belt for each division and rename the weight divisions as 1.Gorilla 2.Average human 3.Fart and finally 4.Tiny little fart.Dunne would be in the latter division.

Possibly, but a lot of what he says makes perfect sense sirwin.
Dunne came back from the U.S. at the perfect time to cash in on a country prepared to throw money at anything. Especially an event cash cow.
He had a great pr team that drove him to the fore and he himself bacame media savvy. In that respect he got incredibly lucky. If he was coming back now he would do well to find a pot to #iss in.
That said, his Cordoba win is surely one of the most courageous Irish sporting victories ever and for that, he deserves the utmost respect.

Cooldine - I'm not a member of the boxing community or even close to it but your post is another slur on something you are again clearly ignorant about.

Just on one of your ridiculous aspersions, having attended various different sporting arenas the best behaved crowd I have ever sat with was at a full National Stadium boxing arena for a low budget fight night. I assume you are making your ridiculous presumption from armchair viewing major events that, like all major sporting occasions, attract varying degrees of gobsh*tes.
By:

When: 22 Feb 10 11:51
Hey KKO5 You were just lucky that the night you went to that kip, that the feller the locals were supporting actually won.The National Stadium is about as appealing a place as Mountjoy,in fact you would possibly bump into the same people there on any given evening.I wouldnt go in to that place unless i had a suit of armour on and even at that id be nervous. Its propably the only place that when the boxers are finished in the ring that they dont bother to take off their gloves until they get home.

I think you`re missing the point.
Do you believe Dunne worked harder than every other Irish sports star to acheive his goal? If he came back now he could work twice as hard for half the amount he got then.
On a point about the crowd at his fights. There was a journo on Matt Cooper last night talking about the Crumlin gang fued. He said that one of the leaders, "Fat" Freddie Thompson lived mainly in Spain but whenever there was a fight in the Point he was there, surrounding by his cronies!
