soccer doesnt need saving. An All Ireland league is very unlikely to happen any time soon.

Depends whether you want to 'save' irish soccer and what you actually think that means.

If you think it should be more like the Premiership (which it needs to be if we are to have a competitive league) then they would need to reduce the number of clubs to around 8 or 10 in both North and South and create a super duper premier league and rebrand the entire thing. I reckon Dublin can only properly support 2 professional soccer clubs. Cork might support 2. Galway and Limerick 1 each. Take your pick for 4 more.

Its crap that youd have to lose so many traditional dublin clubs and rivalries like st pats, rovers and shels but those clubs are all on their knees at this point anyway. The IRFU took some bold steps in effectively creating 4 big clubs in Ireland through the provinces and allowing the actual clubs to become feeders for the provinces. The scale of competitive rugby in Ireland is now right and the benefits are obvious. Similar brave steps are required by the FAI if theyre serious about Irish soccer being anything other than a minority sport.

Cork might support 2
LOL. I`m sure the locals would be happy to have one to support.

You`re hardly comparing like with like. The provincial system was always in situ in rugby and the advent of professionalism created a whole new dynamic in that sport. The IRFU were in the right place at the right time and were well placed to capitalise.
You cant changed the Irish habits of a lifetime in soccer. From MOTD to Sky and beyond. The Irish will always adore English football.
An All-Ireland league would be a short term solution to that long term problem.

competitive meaning what? The EPL can only realistically be won by 4 clubs out of 92 league clubs.

dicking around with the number of teams in the LOI divisions does not work, it has been done relentlessly over the last few years.

2 teams in Cork? You either haven't a clue or you're a comedian?

Rovers on their knees? hardly. In best health since early 80s.

Shels slowly on road to recovery, Pats aren't on their knees either, though they may be limping a little.

I don't realistically see any situation where the grounds start packing out for LOI games whether the big Belfast clubs get involved or not.

The League of Ireland will be supported by the same people who have supported it up till now. It's not perfect, but it never was, and never will be.

No point in competing against EPL, its a completely different experience that appeals to completely different people.

Arguably the last surge of an attempt to raise the LOI beyond its station has caused the financial blackhole affecting many Irish clubs.

Competitive meaning...a league which produces clubs and players that bear comparison with the best on the planet outside of Ireland. The 6 a side leagues on astro parks around dublin are competitive in the way you talk about but thats just amateur sport and nobody sane would pay to watch it.

Professional sport, which soccer actually first brought to this island, is about quality and standards and there simply are no quality or standards in the League of Ireland. All the decent players are exported to england or scotland and the teams don't play an attractive game. It actually lags way behind an amateur organisation in terms of what it produces.

It depends what you're into I suppose. Some prefer it as it is and the way the FAI will keep it - a minority sport in Ireland. Sure why not go the whole way and make it an amateur sport here?

Professional football has failed in Ireland, the people of Ireland don't want a pro-league here.

There was never better footballers playing each week in Ireland than in the last few years. Still the public did not come to the games. We have actually lived through the golden age of the League of Ireland in my opinion (in terms of standard).

The Irish mentality isn't one where we go in large numbers to watch our teams on a week to week basis.

Big crowds at a few GAA matches, soccer internationals and a handful of big rugby games support this point. Big days, big crowds. Loyal week on week support doesn't exist in big numbers on this island, and that's fine, but deluding ourselves about potential could kill even more clubs than have already been laid to rest.

The League of Ireland has produced a reasonable amont of internationals in recent and bygone years and will continue to do so.

All Ireland League (16 clubs) would be ideal saviour of IRELANDS football.

Sadly, with 2% of "supporters" from north/south being colour blind for life, it
is unlikely to happen.
