In spite of defeat in the All-Ireland series in 1980 Offaly bounced back and reached the Leinster final for the second consecutive year in 1981. Wexford provided the opposition on that occasion, however, Martin's side were very much on the up at the time. A narrow 3-12 to 2-13 victory gave Offaly the win and gave Martin a second consecutive Leinster winners medal. Furthermore, this victory allowed Offaly to advance directly to the All-Ireland final where Galway, the reigning champions, were the opponents. An exciting game developed between these two breakthrough hurling teams with both sides exchanging tit-for-tat scores. After fourteen minutes Pat Carroll scored the opening goal of the game for Offaly, however, neither side built up a strong lead. Straight after the interval Martin was doing great work when he batted out an almost certain Galway goal. With just over twenty minutes left in the game Galway led by six points, however, the team failed to score for the rest of the match. Offaly, on the other hand, reduced this lead. Johnny Flahertys hand-passed goal with three minutes was the deciding score of the game. At the full-time whistle Offaly were the winners by 2-12 to 0-15.[5] There were great scenes of joy at Croke Park as Offaly and Martin celebrated their very first All-Ireland title.

didnt realise jim lost his place back to damien in 86.intresting but i dont believe it!!..jim was very unlucky not to get an allstar..

Jim was pure class, a great goalkeeper. At the time when he was going strong my understanding was that members of the media were the mainstay of the all star judging panel and as Jim more or less had a policy of not interacting with the media he ruled himself out of an all star year after year. pity really, class goalkeepers like him are rare and his ability deserved the recognition.
John played minor 3 years running for Offaly and was on the panel for the Offaly minors from the time he was 14. He was pure class also, easily one of the most naturally talented hurlers I have ever seen. He seemed to have it all in just the flick of the wrist. |

The year Brian Whelehan didn't win an All-Star despite being arguably Hurler of the Year really showed the All-Stars up for what they are.
A load of bollix. A good few members of the voting panel stated afterwards that they didn't vote for him because they presumed that the other panel members would have voted for him. |

catch me...ger cunningham won it in 85.he let in a load of goals all throught the year.while he was a great keeper he didnt deserve it that year.he was working for the bank heavily involved in gaa sponsorship and he was a very good interviewee..so there..

1985 Jim Troy played 5 games conceded 4 goals.
Ger Cunningham played 3 conceded 9 goals. I know that in itself doesn't tell the full story but....... (Jim even brought a ball back from behind the line without touching it in the '85 final :) ) |
