Not surprised none of our anti goverment boys seem to be around at the moment promoting the benefits of a new Labour/ Finanna Gael goverment.
According to the Sunday papers the Labour party in Ireland have proposed to increase betting Levy by 50% and apply it to ALL BETS placed on course, over the phone, on television, online, and via EXCHANGE BETTING. Online POKER and CASINO websites would also be brought into the net.
While online operators not based in Ireland but offering a service to Irish customers will be BLOCKED BY IRISH INTERNET PROVIDERS on the direction of goverment if they refuse to register with the Revenue Commissinoners and pay a new betting levy of 1.5% on EVERY BET from a Irish customers.
That could mean BANNING the likes of BETFAIR from our houses. A Betfair spokesperson said if the taxation system proposed by the goverment is fair and equitable and WORKABLE Betfair will apply for a licence and subject itself to that regime.
WORKABLE is the key word there how can Betfair work if a punter us paying 1.5% on his bets. Backing at flippant 1.01 would leave you losing 1/2% on your bet after IT WINS. :0
Likewise betting in-play during a game would be a nightmare if you paid 1.5% tax on every trade and whatever about for the punter, how could Betfair do it as 1% of it cleints might only be based in Ireland during that game trading.
Anyway whatever about Betfair I don't like to see anybody banning certain companies from the interenet that doesn't suit them to me its defeats the philosophy of the internet and is something I would expect more to hear coming out of China and Iran than dear old Ireland.
But whatever the merits about introducing a levy, banning companies who are licence to trade in the EU is too much for me. ;)
Irish Tourist board must be cracking up at the thought. UK visitors to Ireland for holidays or sports visits been denied access to there favourite betting company at home where they can bet in sterling and have funds just because the company didn't see the worth of going to the expense to get a Irish Licence for its clients when they went on holidays........TOTAL MADNESS.....Cheers
its a half a percent increase and trying to get powers, poker and betfair into the tax net
nothing wrong with that imo.
but more than anything, its a bluff. they say this to get the voluntary payments up to cover racing shortfall and say no more about it

I bet those Leoparstown Ring Bookmakers are all Labour Party members and are trying to make sure of no more embarrassements of King Bastion sorts. :^0
Since if a guy had to pay 1.5% levy on everybet. It would be impossible for him to lay anything over 66/1 without end up a loser after the Labour Party bring in there tax. :0
