Ok-it's so obvious it must be a stupid question and I've clearly missed something
but can anyone tell me please what the thinking is in developing an AW track and then closing it down from Nov to Feb ?
I know it's naive -but I had thought that AW tracks were specifically designed for such times of the year . TIA.

You are dead right Vub. That said can you imagine a fate worse than having to tuck into an all weather card on a sunday in January, the only thing worse would be to have to attend one

Its actually hard to find a reason why HRI should be interested, compared to loads why its best left as it is. :0
Certainly a lot of negatives hit you in your face straight away. Like the drop is it now of 15 MILLION available in prize money compared to 2007? Also where would they find the 300 flat horses or so in training they would need to run it? Certaily the English All weather racing at the moment doesn't indicate there is a lot of Irish All Weather horses waiting around for a run. Likewise if the Irish horses aren't in training why give your scare resource (prize money in this case) to overseas invaders who are presently runing across the water for around 1600 winners pot. Plus when would they run it?. Cleary the NH racing is a lot more popular than the flat in Ireland and the bookies also issued a plea to the Irish Horse racing board recently not to double up its fixtures on a day, which make it doubly hard in those winter months to find a opening in the calendar that would suit anybody. Plus our leading jockeys who are riding in far off shores at the moment would they or the public really be impressed to travel to see err, unexposed jockeys on overexposed horses in the depts of winter weather. And where would they find a public of about 3000 payers that would travel on winter weather (isn't that what they say they need through the gate) to go All weather racing regularly. And in the depts of a recession who would be willing enough to pay in enough entrance money to make opening a big racecourse viable? Bearing in mind the slots that are free in the Irish Racing Calendar where no racing is already down, since as was said earlier the bookies don't want HRI doubling up its meetings. ............................................................... I think I be with HRI on this one in fact if anything March instead of Febuary is probably soon enough and save themselfs some further prize money and all the other costs that go with running a race meeting ...Cheers |

Think we all agree that winter is for NH. But given a choice of AW or nothing surely its a no brainer. Why didnt they schedule 1 meeting a week (Friday night) & then when weather looked like being bad at a weekend schedule an extra meet on the saturday or sunday at short notice.

Surely Dundalk could have made some money with the Christmas party season and evening meetings during December at least.

But who puts up the prize money for the races when the HRI is trying to cut it prize money budget by 25% and where will they find the flat horses everyweek.
Like how would you train a flat horse in this weather and who would wants to? As you surely just injured your horse? |

And the last greyhound race going off at 11pm..........it's a shared facility so it has to be fair to both sports...........

Can't agree that they would have any trouble finding runners judging by the stream of horses from here crossing the water to run for 2 and 3 grand!
As for funding it, get ATR and the bookies/exchanges to stump up. |

Its true for Carvills. They are up on each others backs crossing the Irish sea to run for a monkey with the only attracton that some of the racing is on at night, they are guaranteed a run and the owners can watch their horses run on TV.
Prize money is no issue. Funnily enough perhaps the IGRB (even post Paschal the Rascal) will be the ones to drive it through as they seem to have their finger on the pulse. A combined horse and dog card could be a real winner |

Is it possible for a joint card to run a horse race then a dog race and have a race every 15 mins or so ?
If operationally possible it might make for a bit of a change and draw a 'joint' horse and dog crowd. The bookie situation needs to be sorted before they start looking at anything else. |

I think at this stage the bookies in Dundalk have learnt their lesson and wil lbe open to all suggestions

the policy of giving irelands one a/w track a nice long break during the coldest months increasingly looks lunacy. any chance of some emergency fixtures being organised?

Apart from ourselves , is there any great demand for a-w racing in current climatic and economic situation ?
Think it suits the jockeys in particular not to have to travel in poor conditions for one or two rides in a relatively quiet time of the year for them . Top jocks traditionally ride abroad during the winter months , not sure if that still operates . One of ways to even things out would be to run meetings with restrictions applied to jockeys involved to give the lesser fry a chance . Have the trainers association and the jockeys expressed any views on current situation ? |
