The former Arthur Moore trained King Of Ardcarne was having his second outing, 310 days on from his racecourse bow, when a 25/1 winner of a maiden hurdle at Gowran 5½L to the 4/7fav Alice Bradys Call (rated 123, 3rd in the Royal Bond just prior to this) and 4L back to 3rd placed Belord (runs 2.25 Saturday in Cork)
Apart from the above and with due respect to Ms Clarke on her 80th Birthday, this race has an almost nostalgic feel to it, as it sees the return of some FORMER greats.
Hollywood Law returns after 530 days along with the Champion Novice Hurdle 2005 winner, Wild Passion not seen since the 4th.Nov.2006 when 2nd of 4 ¾L behind In Compliance in Down Royal (1,153 days).
9-y-o Footy Facts, a 144 rated hurdler, is also switching back to hurdles following his 1st of 7 5 ½L at Clonmel in front of Glenquest (a winner since, with 10-y-o Southern Vic 9th of 12 53.56L in behind in that race).
Also in the line up we have the 13-y-o Hardy Eustace facing imminent retirement. Still rated 150, he is not the horse he was and has not made the frame in his last 6 outings ! He was 3rd of 8 8.50L behind Catch Me on the 30th.Nov.2008 in the Hatton's Grace and his previous wins prior to that were on the 16th.Nov.2008 in Punchestown when 14/1, 1st of 4 2 ½L to Sizing Europe. Prior to that he won on the 24th.Nov.2007 in Ascot. While he did win this in 2005 after winning the Champion Hurdle that year, and while he should have no problem with the ground, I can see him battle to be second barring an accident.
The line up is completed with the Champion Bumper 2006 (and Champion Novice Hurdle 2007) winner, Glencove Marina, absent for nearly 2 years since Leopardstown in January 2008 when 1st of 7 10L to Finger Onthe Pulse (won the 2008 Jewson afterwards but with only a Grade 3 Chase win since). One of the favourites for the 2008 Arkle he suffered a tendon injury. Mullins did mention on radio with Darragh Maloney that 'his team' "will not be ready early in the Christmas....more later Christmas or New Year time" but he is sure to have him fit and ready for this comeback, to hurdles this time, and is expected to win.

If Farringdon was to win todays 2.15 presumably he would be re-assessed for the Leopardstwn Hurdle.
If he runs a strong race in 2nd or even 3rd can he still be re-assessed or is it just winners who are looked at ?
Many thanks.

Footy Facts (9-4) ran out an easy winner of the Kathleen Clarke 80th Birthday Hurdle at snow-swept Punchestown on Thursday. The ground was already saturated before a flurry of snow hit after racing got under way.
Willie Mullins' Glencove Marina, favourite for the Arkle a couple of years ago before injury struck, was sent off the 2-1 jolly but, under a considerate ride from Ruby Walsh, he was just beaten into third by Hardy Eustace. Dessie Hughes' veteran was ridden patiently by Paddy Flood compared to his normal front-running tactics but he never looked like winning.
Robert Tyner's Footy Facts had won over fences last time and relished the extremely testing conditions under Philip Enright to come home 13 lengths clear of the dual champion hurdler. Tyner said: "That worked well. We thought Hardy Eustace was going to make it and we were going to take him on about three out but we got a grand lead in the end. "He picked up really well and Philip said that's the best he's felt in a long time. "This was just a stepping stone as our aim is the Thyestes Chase in Gowran Park at the end of January."
Troytown Chase winner Beroni took advantage of a much lower handicap mark over timber with an all-the-way win in the Buy Your Tickets On Line Handicap Hurdle. Mullins decided to skip the Welsh National earlier this week and that decision paid dividends as the 9-10 favourite won by four and a half lengths. Paul Townend set a pretty sedate pace out in front but kicked clear entering the straight and try as Farringdon might, he never looked like getting on terms. Mullins said: "We were happy with that. I suppose he just outstayed them there. "We'll have a look at the Thyestes Chase in Gowran Park now, I'll see if we can find something else but I'd say we'll go for the Thyestes."
