Fear factor? I was broken into two weeks ago. Had a fight in my own hallway. Fella cut his hand on the door on way out. I wasnt sure if he could take a case against me or not. Now he cant and will be better prepared next time

Sorry to hear that. Could you post section 2 (5). It appears to be missing.
It is interesting that the Minister has been able to drag himself away from cases as diverse as Henry's handball and the abuse of Irelands children to deal with this matter.
This government engages in distraction on a daily basis.

Its about time these laws are going thru long over due my only worry now is burglars will carry more lethal weapons themselfs but at least now a homeowner has a chance without worrying about getting sent down but I must admit law or no law break into my home and you will end up badly injured or dead I never really cared about the law when it came to burglars they deserve nothing more than a good ass kicking

I take your point about the distraction as well but I think htis legislation is urgently required. A lot of towns and oulying areas in the 'commuter' areas are being plagued by what is termed petty crime. There is nothing petty to this at all. Saying that the person that broke into my house is a local man. I wouldn't have shot him even if I had the gun loaded but would be nice to know the law is actually on my side.

Did ye see that show on RTE on Monday night about the criminals? If the judges are going to keep letting**bag's like that lot out on the streets again and again, it is only right that homeowners are allowed defend themselves against such slime.

I didn't see it but heard about it alright. Is about time people were afforded the right not to have to run when faced with someone that has broken into their home. What a stupid concept anyway that up to now if you didn't retreat and a fight ensued then you are to blame.

Spot on. Remember the McNally (?) case or the Tony Martin case in England? I'll tell you what, I think I read a story in a paper during the week about two Asian lads that caught a few robbers in their home in England and gave one of them a right beating when they got hold of them. Something like 4 years each they got and the robber gets off with no jail time.

A good strong baton blow to the collarbone isnt lethal either...
Heres a question, do ye reckon this new law will result in:
A- An increase in burglery related deaths.
or
B- A decrease in burglery

Dont think it will change to be honest. I sure before this law people are not thinking of the law when someone breaks into their house. It's just common sense. Someone breaks into your house their fair game. If they die in the process thats their fault.

All we'll see now on the news is these civil liberties/human rights pr1cks going on about how the poor criminal will be killed now!
Its only a pity you couldn't torture them whilst waiting on the cops to arrive. ;)
Must go and write my letter to Santie now...
Dear Santie, can I have a spade & some WD-40.

The new laws if brought in make sense. I never have it happen to me but know people who have. Must be a terrible ordeal especially if you have kids in the house. Their is some nasty animals out their and the law needs to be on the side of the victim. Most law abiding citizens who have confronted burglars i'd say the main target is to get them out of their house and protect themselves and their family. I'm sure most people would not have intention's of killing them. However if they do they should not he held responsible.

A proper overhaul of the justice system is necessary not just this type of populist stupidity.
Headline grabbinbg bullshyte as usual.
How many people does this affect? We're told year after year that crime rates are falling so who's pushing this agenda.

Yes boys new laws are not before time..i have firearms and have no problem using them to defend my house or family but local travellers are well aware of this so it has never come to pass thankfully but the new law will make burgulars think twice about entering the houses of known gun holders...

Agree on the dog as well had a knackers robbed a few houses on our estate a couple years back one night, and our dog a border collie as gentle a dog as you can get chased off two burgulars from our house. They left the crowbars and screwdrivers and everything behind as well they must have just legged it.
So any dog but the nastier the better I suppose again the knackers hate them.

I dont think the law reform operate on a populist basis, the amount of people that this affects is rising on a daily basis as there seems to be a spate of breakins in our area lately.
a simple way to deter robberies would be to increase the penalties, make it a min of 20 years , where you would serve 20 years. a bit ott but it might make the gougers think twice before breaking in.
its time that those that commit crimes against society are made to pay properly.

Whilst it is important that home owners are decriminalised for protecting their homes from burglars, I do hope that there is corresponding legislation allowing stiffer penalties for burglars that arrive 'tooled-up'. It is inevitable that burglars will become more armed, several posters on this thread have already pointed this out, so this needs to be legislated against.
It never ceases to amaze me how this government introduces a measure that has far reaching & obvious effects, but never introduces related measures for balance. I suppose this is what happens when the Dail is full of powerful solicitors & accountants have no say.

A good start would be these holidayphiles in Leinster House. Running the country into the ground and taking more holidays than ever this Christmas.
Cowen's salary should be immediately reduced to the av ind wage until results merit an increase.
Slackers.

hatama - agree that did sound like a starnge comment, but think its just commonsense that any**bag will think twice if they hear a dog.
My sister had her dogs to thank earlier this year, had been a spate of break-in's where she lives in Down, she was in the garden one day, when a van stopped outside the house, two lads in the van started talking to her, asking her for a cup of tea, she just called her 2 dogs and they were'nt long pi$$ing off! They are 2 lovely rottweilers btw. ;)
