12.20 Cousin Vinny won on his racecourse debut in a Punchestown bumper 2 seasons ago and he was 3rd in the Royal Bond first time out last season. He can go well fresh and Willie Mullins is relying on him to win this race for Mullins for the 4th straight year but Mullins horses are not firing at the moment and I prefer Roberta Goldback who ran the subsequent winner Osana (5th favourite for the Arkle) to 3/4 of a length on his first run over fences in 2m beginners chase here at Navan. He was running on well that day and looked to be enjoying the longer trip in the Drinmore last time when he fell 5 out when still in contention. With his previous chasing experience I think Roberta Goldback is the one to beat. 7/4 Hills/Spoils
12.50 Ive been impressed by Donnas Palm this season, winning two hurdles in good style either side of finishing 2nd in the November handicap on the flat. His record at Navan is 3 wins from 3 runs and hes proven on heavy ground. He wont be much of a price so Ill be happy to watch but will be surprised if hes beaten.
1.20 Disappointing turn out for this grade 1 hurdle for which there is 45,000 for the winner, only 4 runners. Both Shinrock Paddy and Rhyl Accord showed good form in bumpers and each won well on their first run over hurdles. Both have the potential to become top quality hurdlers but their prices reflect this. At the prices The Hurl looks the best in this to me at 10/1. He won a grade 2 novice hurdle over course and distance last time on heavy ground. The 2m4f trip on heavy ground suited him well and although there is a good chance he wont get an uncontested lead with Shinrock Paddy in the field, I still think theres every chance The Hurl could be good enough to win this. 10/1 PP
1.50 Rubi Light (each way) looks an interesting contender. Hes joined the Robert Hennessy yard from France where he has shown some good form. He won a 2m2f 9-runner chase by a distance on very soft on his penultimate start in April. He was runner-up in a 2m2f Auteiul hurdle worth £21,000 on his last start. He attempted to make all but was caught in the final 50 yards. The form of that run was given a big boost by the 4th winning a hurdle worth £21,000 next time and the 5th winning two chases on next two starts (both worth £23,000). This is his first run for 224 days but 2 miles on heavy should suit and he might go well at decent odds. Both Truxton King and Sovereign are not certain to like the going and while Molville looks the one to beat but he is priced accordingly. 7/1 Generally
2.20 All The Cousins for Tony Martin who this race last year and whose two handicap hurdlersi nthe past 2 weeks have finished 1st and 2nd. All The Cousins ran out an impressive winner on his last run over hurdles in a 2m2f Sligo handicap hurdle on heavy ground. The form of the race was franked by the runner-up getting placed off 3lbs higher next time and the 3rd has shown good form over fences since. All The Cousins disappointed over fences on his first start of this season but back over hurdles and only up 8lbs for his handicap hurdle win I think he will be tough to beat with Ruby Walsh riding. 11/4 PP/Lads
2.50 Judge Deed (small each way) for Noel Meade who has gained 2 wins and 3 places from his 10 runners in this race since 2000. Judge Deed has been placed on 2 of his 3 runs over fences here at Navan and has shown he handles ground with ease in it. Judge Deeds jumping let him down when still in contention in a hot Thurles beginners chase on his penultimate start. He finished a fair 4th in a 3m5f Fairyhouse handicap chase off 110 last time out. It was a good quality race, won by Parsons Pistol and if Judge Deed can build on that effort he can go close off 109. 10/1 PP
3.20 Tornado Shay won a bumper on his first start at Leopardstown in January and was then a good 3rd behind useful performers Universal Truth and Blackstairmountain in another Leop bumper in March. He did not run his race at the Champion Bumper at Punchestown in April but bounced right back to form when travelling powerfully and running out an easy 8 length winner of a 2m Galway bumper on soft on his second last run, the form of which looks solid. He once again won very easily last time at Fairyhouse by 9 lengths. T**nd OMara thinks a lot of him and he looks the one to beat in this contest but I won't be backing at shorter than 5/4.
CD8 - yeah said as much on the ante post forum, if the connections aren't too disappointed when a horse gets beat(esp fto) then you need to read between the lines. ;)

Am wetting myself laughing at the main forum bashing Ruby after every race.. some of the Mullins horses just arent getting home at all. Hardly poor Ruberts fault.

15 Adults 10 pensioners. Very reasonable for a Grade 1 card. Rewarded with a fine crowd and good racing on a cold but pleasnt day. The prices in the restaurant bordered on robbery though. Soup at 4.50 ( 3 in Fairy). Beef Roll 9.
Race 1) Roberto Goldback (6/4) won a match with the uneasy jolly Cousin Vinny (8/11f) who should improve for the run.
Race 2) Donnas Palm (4/9f) well backed from 8/15 settled this in a matter of strides. This race was run in a crawl and is best ignored for study purposes. This owned by the Grand Alliance of politicians who deserved a day out after a highly charged week in the Dail. Many of them were in attendance. They have a good one in their hands.
Race 3) Shinrock Paddy (7/2) Another small field as the 3rd choice took the race by the horns to win well. A very astute ride by Alain Cawley to win his second G1 in 7 days. Ironically he had Ruby behind on Rhyl Accord (11/10f) the well whispered jolly who he has to step aside for if Ruby is available in a G1 race.
Race 4) Moville (11/8f) Well backed (2/1 am) got up in the dying stride for Paddy Flood to deny the luckless Garrett Cotter ( 1 win 09/10) on Der Speigler (9/1)
Race 5) Benalma (10/1) won easy for Alan Crowe (5 wins 09/10) who needed it badly with his stable Roche hopelessly out of form. his chase rating pointed to a big run here. All The Cousins (15/8f) well backed (3/1am) never threatned for the Martin/Walsh alliance. It was a miserable day for Ruby all six rides biting the dust.
Race 6) Glenquest (7/2f) another well backed jolly (6/1 am) won easy for Slippers Madden from the luckless Barry Cash (1 win 09/10) on Benefit Night (16/1). A lucky spare for Madden as regular pilot for the stable Kevin Coleman recovers from a broken leg schooling Hunters in his home place.
Race 7) Drumbaloo (5/2) Clear 2nd choice got first run for Robbie McNamara one of the characters in the Fairyhouse bumper 24 hours earlier on well backed jolly Tornado Shay (1/3) 2/5 taken.
Ride of The Day: Paddy Flood's never say die spirit on Moville who refused to accept defeat got him up on the line.

Good day backed Roberto, Shinrock Paddy and Benalma - left before the last. Roast beef rolls were a bit on the expensive side at 9 euros - I was the first to buy one I think and they were lovely and I had to help myself to a second one before I left.
