A replica of the White House will form the centrepiece of a 460 million euro Las Vegas-style village deep in the countryside.

Plans for the 800-acre development beside Two-Mile Borris in Co Tipperary include a casino, National Hunt racecourse, a 7,000 seater greyhound track, five-star hotel, a 15,000 seater concert venue - with retractable roof - and golf course.
Ex-government minister Michael Lowry, top racehorse trainer Aidan O'Brien and concert promoter Denis Desmond have backed the venture dreamt up by slot-machine tycoon Richard Quirke.
I would have thought even in the middle of the celtic tiger that this would have been grossly ambitious... in todays recessionary times its certainly bold and certainly foolish surely

BY TONY O'HEHIR7.05PM 27 OCT 2009 THURLES racecourse is likely to close if ambitious plans for a new racecourse on its doorstep are given the go-ahead. A group of private developers yesterday unveiled plans for a 460 million cultural, sporting and leisure complex to be built on an 800-acre site close to Two-Mile Borris, a village in County Tipperary just four miles from Thurles racecourse. Aidan OBrien was among those to welcome the plans, which include Flat and jumps turf tracks and Irelands second all-weather circuit after Dundalk. Butdoubts remain over whether the proposed development, the brainchild of Dublin-based businessman Richard Quirke, will be granted planning permission and a casino gaming licence. If the project is given the green light, it is anticipated that building work will take three years to complete. It appears talks have taken place already with the owners of the family-run Thurles racecourse, with a view to the track closing once the new facility is up and running. Tipp is in the MIDDLE of Ireland ffs. (not all bog land :^0 )
ANYWAY the real issue here is Legalising CASINO's anywhere in Ireland full stop ! and nothing atall to do with new hotels, golf courses, greyhound tracks. Side issues maybe 1. another 'all-weather race track' or 2. and more importantly, whether or not Sir M. Lowry can pull this off before the next election (has 2 years). |

Yes the countrys skint and they are going to build a new racetrack,dog track,casino,concert hall,golf club,500 room Grade A hotel and best of all they are going to replicate the White House in the middle of it.The land is unfloodable(thats a new one on me),and the location is an automatic choice,wherelse but Two Mile Borris.They had a look at Kilnaskully but it didnt meet all the required criteria,but Two Mile Borris fits in beautifully with their plans.Cant wait till the casino opens,im booked into the "White House" the first night the all weather track opens,and im really looking forward to it.
What in the love of jesus were Murtagh and O Brien doing at the Horse and Jockey the other night looking at the plans for this rubbish? |

White House, unfloodable, 500 rooms. White elephant, the man above will decide if its to be flooded or not though they'll have no trouble filling the 500 rooms on races nights with huge demand from inrunning hawks falling over themselves to get on the soft money gravy train

Whats the big deal about a group of private wealthy investors building a world class facility and in turn getting casinos legalised in Ireland.
God knows any extra revenue is needed at this present time. To be honest cant see anything negative. What do the normally negative people on here think?. |

The Phoenix Park was possibly the first major venue that the "Vegas Mob" had a very serious look at in Ireland.
Charlie might have been IN POWER (not sure who was the boss back then) ? Can anyone remember who was Minister for Finance then ????? Minister for Tourism might have a had an interest too ???? I would imagine that Murtagh and O Briens bosses are extremely unlikely to invest in a casino in Borris and Horris or wherever the **k this place is.Far from being negative,im being a bit realistic i would have said.The one thing that wasnt icluded in their plans and left me slightly bemused was a landing pad for a spaceship,because theres more likely to be a sighting of aliens than there is a casino in Borris and Horris |

Realism = practical = pragmatic = sensible though does not necessarily = negative. Forget about the casino and the hotel and the golf because I guess most on here are interested in Horse Racing and the country is awash with two of the former. Do we really think the local population will support this racetrack any more than they have supported Tipp, Thurles, Cork, Gowran, Limerick considering that the racing will be more or less of the Flat variety. Considering the enormous success with attendances Dundalk have enjoyed can someone set an index for the avg attendance this venue is likely to attract after its first meet?

X A ROUF, No idea what the avg att in Dundalk is though i'd like to think its higher than actual though not nearly as much as was wished for in its pre conception days. Dont get me wrong im all for innovation and investment WHEN ITS WORTHWHILE. I would love to know how avg attendances at the old Dalk compare with the current.

Plans for a €460m sporting and leisure investment, which include Ireland’s newest racecourse, were unveiled today in Nenagh in a development which is set to employ a total of 3,000 people during the three years of construction.
The 800 acre development is set beside the village of Two-Mile-Borris and will be known as the Tipperary Venue. The project will include a racecourse, an all-weather and floodlit course, a 500 room hotel, a casino, golf course, greyhound track and a 15,000 seater entertainment venue. The chief investor in the development is Dublin businessman Richard Quirke, a former Garda from Thurles who is best known in the gaming industry as owner of Dr Quirkeys’ Good Time Emporium in Dublin. Speaking at Nenagh today, Quirke stated “we are hoping that 80% of our patronage will come from abroad and 20% will come from home.” Work is expected to begin next Spring. |

CMIYC is correct . Its about the casino. The rest of it is smoke and mirrors . The developer, Richard Quirke, did not speak during a one-hour presentation to invited guests. Mr Lowry said he wished “to explain to the media who he is”.
The former Fine Gael minister said: “In these times of economic challenge, our country needs businessmen like Richard Quirke” whom he described as “a local man made good who wanted to give something back”. A man who made his money from casinos now wants to"give something back" by opening another casino. Let's hope, for all their sakes,that he never has a falling out with the locals On a non-related matter,I'm sure Michael is looking forward to the forthcoming report of the Moriarty Tribunal. |
