I know this is off topic, but does anyone know why the vehicle registration tax is so much when you take a car into the Irish republic? Is there a historical or political reason fo this?
I was going there from the Uk and rather than renting a car for a 1k for a couple of weeks, i could buy one here and then sell it on in the republic. I have been checking prices between Irish and Uk dealers and the difference in prices for similiar models is substantial.
Surely this VRT tax is ripping off the Irish people or am I missing something here?
Bring in a 3/4yo 5 series BMW with low milage and you should off load it easy enough. (although with only 32 shopping days to Xmas, it's a bad time of the year to import a car as road tax in Ireland starts on 1st Jan., not August)
