Naas Saturday

Just a quick synopsis of a most enjoyable day down at the Bookies graveyard.

A nice touch by Tom Ryan to give all patrons who paid in a free €5 bet with the bookies and a €5 voucher for food or drink.

Weather was beautiful in the AM but some woeful showers were had during racing.

Race 1) Watched the first race in a local hostelry in Naas and was cursing Carberry on the TV for his ride on the jolly Prima Vista for a woeful ride as was Mat t Ch apman on ATR only to find out later on it was Emmett Mullins. Sunwake and much improved Andrew Lynch were rewarded for consistency.

Race 2) Watched the second race in the car park having a chat with car park attendant Paul ear wigging for tips and saw the jolly Tranquil Sea win snug under Mr Reliabilty Andy Mc.

Didn't take long to hear poor Paul Carberry was stood down for failing a breath test. A chap told me they will have to make an example this time and someone on this forum said he could be stood down for a month.

Race 3) Noble Prince and the very capable Alain Cawley won this very cheekily. Was told this was a machine and lumped on at 4/7 with Pat O'Hare.

Race 4) The nap of the day River Liane won this very easy. A mistake at the last gave the others hope but he quickened away again. 15/8 was a juicy price I thought but 2/1 later appeared. I was told later a little 9/4 appeared. Slippers is riding much better this year and lets hope he can keep clear of injury.

Race 5) Montana Slim became the first leg of a treble for Mick O'Hare son of Barney. The punters hadn't a clue here and the bookies had to go 7/1 the jolly to entice. A 3 way battle ensued and Keith Clarke's perseverance just got him up in the shadow of the post.

Race 6) On track bookies sighed relief as at last a jolly got turned over. Much hyped Bedford Row 2/1( Davy Hyland) well taken never promised. Bale O'Shea and Mr P J Carberry was the second leg of O'Hare's treble. I haven't seen this Carberry ride before but at least it was some compensation for the family after the earlier trials a tribulations for Paul.

Race 7) Another major gamble landed as the O'Hare's Sweet Shock was the last straw for the oncourse layers, no doubt Laddies contributing to it. They had major liabilites I was told in a trixie that the O'Hare's had on their 3 horses. L Mc Niff is a name to look out for. I thought this was going nowhere early in the straight but as if he got an electric shock he really took off in the last 2 furlongs.
The layers couldn't give away early fav Talab (11/8 morning) and Davy Hyland could be heard leading the charge hawking it at 7/2. The changed ground made for testing conditions and Barry Connell just couldn't keep Talab at all balanced hanging all over the track having given the outside to no one early in the straight.

Al in all a great day was had. The pity that Naas have lost their other November Saturday to a Wednesday. They had been given Curragh fixtures for 2009 only to lose them when the Curragh project was aborted. They weren't even given it back for 2010 by the fixtures committee.

That was a nice treble for the last 3 races , same stable , must have had some bets with the 3 of them in it . Ladcrooks were mentioned , did they back them there ( and did they get their prices ) ?

Read the article today about the 3 O'Hare winners last Saturday week . Nice pickings . But I dont think the approach to backing the horses was amateur . Well done anyway to them , getting 3 winners in one day ( never mind runners ) does not happen too often .
