There’s nothing wrong with begrudging the extortionate amounts we pay to keep our homes warm. It’s an essential imo, not one of life’s comforts.

Just place your Real Madrid bets to win the Champions league on the kitchen table ,a warm glow will warm the room, soon the whole house will reach boiling point as the bets heat up in the next few months, you will be opening the windows by December as the heat will reach 100 degrees from the bets and all in the house will be sweating.Laugh
Report doorman99 • October 20, 2026 6:39 PM BST
Top tip, get a heated throw, £30 everywhere, uses next to no electric and your only worry will be falling asleep in the chair before you go to bed. Held out on boiler til end Nov last year, prob do the same again due to this brilliant invention.

Report duffy • October 20, 2026 6:51 PM BST
doorman,

Mrs. duffy says, that's all very well but what about when you want to get up and make a cup of tea, mooch about the house, you don't want to be feeling that cold air around the house and you're not carrying that great thing with you, Mrs.duffy expressly states that you want to feel the warm in the rooms.
Report doorman99 • October 20, 2026 6:55 PM BST
Yes but dials from 1 to 9 (5 here now) and if you have it on 9 Mrs Duffy will be glad to get up to get away from the heat whilst she makes her tea!

Report duffy • October 20, 2026 7:10 PM BST
doorman,

I am with you on this and think it's a good idea, however, I've gone back to Mrs. duffy with your suggestion and she has become aggressive, stating that she doesn't need to be told about putting extra layers on when it's cold, I would treat this with a pinch of salt though as yesterday she fell off the step ladder whilst she was changing the curtains and may be suffering from a lingering injury affecting her mood.Plain
Report sageform • October 20, 2026 7:14 PM BST
Just decided to test out the boiler this evening. I will leave it on for an hour to see which radiators are working. First time since April. As you say Tiger the combination of cold and damp weakened our resolve to wait until Nov 1.
Report s.kenbo • October 20, 2026 7:15 PM BST

Report sageform • October 20, 2026 7:20 PM BST
No sense waiting until we get another frost and then find that the boiler doesn't work. We had a hoar frost on Saturday morning but as it was sunny we didn't put heating on.

We're on kerosene, out in the sticks, no gas. Price has doubled since the war started. £1000k to fill the tank to 2/3 last week. Be lucky to get away with just one more before Spring.
Report iswearitsoath • October 20, 2026 8:43 PM BST
Nope, haven't felt cold as yet

My rule is generally to hold off until November, or at least until after the clocks go back.

Agree 100% with doorman about the heated throw. Got one a few years back - great buy. Tend to use one if it's a little nippy, say autumn or early spring, instead of putting the heating on. Great when watching the TV on a cold day.
