Bit of a false equivalence there Reg if i may say so
I was too young in the Sixties to properly appreciate the music scene but there's not much doubt that the Beatles have to be one of the most influential bands in history. I would have loved to have been born 10 years earlier just to have experienced the explosion of creativity back then. My own favs from those days are another band who had an even shorter life span than the Fab 4 and that is The Doors, never heard another band like them.
Today's pop music is just so bland by comparison. I listen to Radio Caroline all the time as it's a station that steers clear of all the dross in the charts these days, they play plenty of new stuff but not the rubbish you hear on Radio 1 for instance.

Dixie, should have made myself clearer To me, the Beatles were a Rock band, and I suspect they would have liked to have been viewed as such, rather than a Pop group. There is no doubt that their music over the 8 years or so went through lots of different changes, and most of their songs were, and still are, excellent. I was suggesting that ABBA were strictly a Pop band, imo...and similarly produced a load of brilliant songs from 74 onwards for a decade or so, although admittedly without as much variety as the Beatles, but still a fair bit.

...Well lads, I have played the acoustic guitar for many years now, (amateurishly), and I would like to suggest to you that to fully appreciate the " depth" of some of The Beatles harmonies and structures, you are best served by ditching the vocal renderings and listening to instrumental versions .. As examples, if you visit Youtube, and listen to Goran Scollster play "Eleanor Rigby"......or for a different vibe, try Tommy Emmanuel playing " Day Tripper" and "Lady Madonna".
I guarantee you will hear things that you've never experienced before in that music !
A better way to spend half an hour than studying racing form !
I'd be interested to hear any feedback from musical forum folk .

The Beatles were so impressive that Paul Macca left his successful middle of the road band Wings to join them. A truly great pop combo the likes of which will never be seen again. Macca & Lennon compositions & music much greater than the sum of the parts as per A Day in The Life. Can't compare ABBA & the Beatles to the extent arguably different genres. As an ex guitar player I can tell you that on the whole Beatles tunes are easier to play than ABBA tunes but that doesn't detract from them.
