Always a good watch, imo
From Peterlee in County Durham tonight
I never knew the town , a new town I assume, was named in the 40s after a local miner's leader
Cannot think of many places in uk named after people born 1900-ish onwards...Milton Keynes the only one I can think of

Peterlee was built in the 1960s/1970s to take the coal mining communities from pits that had closed or would close - Blackhall, Horden etc. Modern factories and trading estates were built, but only ever half filled and pay was lower in factory jobs than mining so unemployment and lack of money was a big problem by 1990 when the mines had all closed. People were encouraged to move out of their Victorian terraced houses into new housing that was not the best quality and did not encourage the same level of community. Bright young people moved away, leaving behind the old and less articulate. It became a classic left behind town, despite modern buildings.

Cheers Analyst, I take a real interest in UK history
Seems I was a few years out, 60s not 40s
Some great local views on the programme tonight, does seem like a left behind town as you say

deep reform territory, a nonce bonnet shop might do well
Report saddo • October 9, 2026 10:45 AM BST
Reform territory or not, I expect the panel, as ever, were mainly leftist, like the host.

Don't watch QT anymore...just winds me up. I do know Peterlee pretty well though and not to mince words but its a hell hole. Was brought up a few miles from there and it aint a place to move to if your an outsider. Sedgefield is like a different country.

Yes, being the BBC, plus the host's bias, they do tend to give more airtime to the Lefties...
And the audience definitely generally left leaning
Last night wasn't too bad in that regard, the Right on the panel getting plenty of applause from the audience...much to the disgust of that Daily Mirror editor bloke who's from the North East, can't remember his name but can't stand him
