more fatalities over hurdles than chases, due to more hurdle races than chases and higher speed when jumping

Over the 13-year study window, there were 242,486 hurdle starts compared to 141,922 steeplechase starts. Because hurdles are the standard entry point for young jump horses, the sheer volume of runners results in a higher annual death toll (~1,096 total hurdle deaths vs. ~836 steeplechase deaths over the study period

Chepstow's Welsh Racing Festival, the traditional jumps season opener, will be run without chase races as the track continues to feel the effect of an extreme summer drought.
The three-day meeting staged between October 9-11, all live on Sky Sports Racing, is at the centre of a major fixture reshuffle in response to a prolonged dry period which has left the ground unseasonably dry and hard. |

It's the same arguments about it though acey - these horses wouldn't even exist if there wasn't the racing for them.
Most are well looked after, cared for, and retire from racing having loved what they do. |

Additionally, if we (punters) are supposed to feel bad about the issue, what should we say of people who do this for their living - trainers for example, or jockeys?
